I will tell you two stories about elderly health care.
One my father lived with us and in the nursing home for a while. He was fortunate to have done well in his live as for as having an estate. My father had COPD and had to have an oxygen concentrater. Mdedecare would have piad to rent one at $300 a month, I bought one for $375 and had it reworked and he used it for five years. He knew about the $300 a month for rental and was livid about it and told me to find one to buy. When he went in the nursing home he paid $2400 a month for his care. When he died the estate paid $144000 in inhertiance taxs part to the federal government and part to Texas. The federal governmet paid the Texas part out of their share so $144000 was all we had to pay. We were also fortunate in we did have to sell any real estate. The land was divided and some of us used it to ranch with and some of us did not. There were four of us. All of us got in the excess of $250,000 each Now mind you all of was past sixty years old. Three of us have nothing one of us still has his and it has grown considerly. Just trying to pont out if you have it then you will have to spend it to take care of yourself.

Two my mother-in-law who fell and broke her hip right after my fathers death also had to go in the nursing home because she is heavy and needs a wheel chair to get around. Our house is not handicapped acesseble. We could have gotten a grant to remodel our house to take care of her. We did not because my wife's arthritis was getting worse and she could not take on any more work. My mother in law draws $750 a month in SS benefits and the nursing home takes it. Medicade picks up the rest.
There has been $144,000 dollars spent on her to take care of her for the remaning yersof her life. There are several doctors she has to go to so they schedule appointments every four months. Nothing changes they just document her health progress.

I am not trying to sway any opinions either way just posting my personal experiance for you to see how some things have worked in my life.

Here's how the goverment worked in my life lately:
My dad is on the heart transplant list, if he doesn't get a new ticker within a year and a half, he's done. Eight months or so ago, he went to Mayo Clinic and the doctors there decided that he needed a pump put in that would give him a constant drip of a certain medication. Medicaid cleared them for the procedure. They put in the apparatus and after two days, everything was looking good and they were ready to turn him loose, but Medicaid balked at sending him home with the abilty to buy the drip drug from the local pharmacy (which they would have to order, of course) because the cost was about $200/day. But, they had no problem with him staying in the hospital, paying Mayo for the drug + a $5000/day hospital room! It was three days of wrangling back and forth before they finally agreed to let him come home, all because of some goverment nonsense where "the book" didn't allow for common sense. We were all just shaking our heads in disbelief. I wasn't impressed with government "management," but seeing how they manage everything else, I guess it is expected.
