my horrible day !

well, last night, I had a couple cows looking close, so this morning I head out to see what the score is. one had calved, the other was still milling around. I wanted to run her up to the catch pen to keep an eye on her. the Mrs says "let nature take it's course"

at noon I decide that she needs look at, so the kids and I run her up, while the Mrs goes to town after groceries....still betting on nature.

the cow is all worked up, so I decide to go off to the other place thinking she may settle down, look in on her around 5 or so......

at 4 the radio in the shop is blasting, so I shut off the welder to listen, and they are looking for me, ....the Mrs got thrown off the horse!!!

away to the hospital we go....3 hours later we head home with 1 broken rib and 3 cracked ones...and a BUNCH of pain killers! get her all settled in, and I head out to get after the cow that nature forgot.....

backwards calf. dead. so the $500 ER visit, the $400 dead calf, and the $300 xray bill really made my day!!!

but on the bright side, the wife could have been alot worse (thank God she is fine) and by bringing her home, I saved myself the $1000 over night in the hospital!!! can you believe they get $1000 a night ???

anyone looking to buy a good horse?

Ouch Jigs... Always hate those let nature take its course moments when it comes to calving. I hate making that call.

Last winter, the guy working for me showed up at 6pm.. I had just been out at 5:30 and told him to keep an eye on cow 126, a red baldy, that had just gone into labor a bit back, had a foot out... I was a bit worried because we had been having a heck of a time with this group of heifers just giving up. Drove me nuts. Well, I got out before hitting the hay and ask him what is going on with that cow, said it had calved... Great.. I went to bed and than 3 hours later the darn cell phone rang for me to get out there, had to pull a calf. It was cow 126... He had seen 128 calf, who happened to be 126s basic twin... Calf wasn't dead when it came out but was within 20 minutes... Ticked me off, I knew something was wrong but decided to let nature take its course. Simple leg back, took no time or effort to pull that calf, would have been alive if I had been more proactive.

At the same time I have gotten all worked up after watching a heifer, brought her in and had her lay down and pop a calf out before I could get her in the pen to pull... Well, at least it is usually raining or -10 when I have to pull a calf, that makes it more pleasent.

Sorry to hear about the wife, at least she is only a little worse for wear.. And it is not the room that is 1000 bucks, it is that fantastic meal that is, heck they just toss the room in for free.

jigs---wife is gonna need alot of support over the next few months as ribs are notorious for taking their own sweet time to heal.....and each time she takes a breath, she will be reminded of this day!! I sure hope she heals up well!!!

Sorry to hear about Mrs. Jigs breaking and cracking ribs. That hurts; I've done it twice. Seems like a person always gets a cold out of the deal and needs to cough. I went to the doc once quite a few years back and told him, "My ribs hurt and I've got a bad cold. I can take one or the other, but am having trouble with both problems at once."

He gave me a brace for my ribs and some powerful cough medicine. I'm not sure that I would recommend the brace. You get dependent on it, and can hardly stand to take it off. The second time I broke ribs, I saved my money and didn't go to the doc. They finally healed up anyway.

It's too bad about the dead calf. That just kind of goes with the ranching game.

Take heart--tomorrow's a brand new day. :)

Jigs, So sorry you all had quite a memorable day. You must be wondering why both things on the same day.

A word of warning unless you like black eyes, don't hug Mrs. Jigs for about 8 weeks! My hubby could never seem to remember that after water skiing fractured mine. Also steer her clear of folks that like to clap you on the back       Shoulder surgery and fractured ribs are like a magnet for those folks LOL :? One of life's mysteries.

she is anti doctor and anti medicine. won't even take aspirin for a horrid headache.(pure as the driven snow....yes I see the irony in her marrying me!)

when I got home and saw her, I though she looked rough, but she has a pretty low pain tolerance..... when I wanted to take off her shirt to get a look, she said "just get me to the doctor, I want a shot to make the pain go away"

that was when the light went on for me, that she was hurting pretty bad.......
she would moan, then shake ...... almost like when she was in labor......I told her that, then asked "you ain't pregnant are you?"

she gave me the sweetest smile and replied " you make me laugh, and I will kill you in your sleep tonight"

pretty quiet the rest of the way to town.

Sounds like a heck of a bad day, to me....... :? So sorry about the calf.

Whatever you do, please don't make Mrs. Jigs laugh......when I had a horse fall with me in 2001, and broke some ribs on one of those patches of bunch grass they had on that ranch, my "guys" loved to tell me jokes, and then watch me try not to laugh. It was cruel, to say the least.....Hope she heals real fast.........unlike some of the rest of us, who still have trouble from time to time.

well, I may be an ass, but my woman is a queen to me, so I imagine I will do my best.... lucky the kids are home on break, so they are helping out with a bunch of stuff.

she is up walking around telling the kids what needs done...I think her butt is tired from sitting, so she forces herself to get up.

liked the goodies Katrina??? well then I guess that exlax did not work like I wanted!

it appears the kids will live on hamburgers, soup and pizza for a while!

And they'll be in 7th Heaven if they are anything like my Grandkids-- add in Mac and Cheese and cereal (Trix) and they could survive forever..

Tho I have an 8 year old granddaughter that isn't gonna be a cheap date-- she's already got quite a taste for steak and shrimp....

I bet you won't hear a complaint from them at all, either!

I know you won't be a pill and try to make her laugh, it's just something I never thought about, until I was in that position. Ya know, a kinda "word to the wise" deal? No offense intended...........
