My journal entry for Saturday, June 15, 1968
It rained last night, and today dawned cool and wet. Since it was still raining, I arose later than usual—at 7:00—and moped out for breakfast at 7:00.
As the rain was still descending at a rapid rate, the Green Valley crew started a big Spring Cleaning in the machine shed.
My job consisted mainly of sorting good stuff from junk. Dad put up a wooden wall across most of the east side, to be used for hanging up tools and keeping things in order. The hired men helped straighten up, saw lumber, etc.
The usual four of the fencing crew, plus Sybil, left for the Leach Place at about 11:00. We ate our lunch when we arrived. Then Dad got in the horses, and I used Jig to do some riding. I moved the bunch from the horse pasture across the fence south, and then got three yearling heifers back in the right pastures. Two of these were in Jensen’s pasture. I then rode over and helped Doug and Lloyd pick up the remains of a tore-out fence. We hauled this to the dump and strung some wire around a tree lot. Dad and Sybil came along about then from fencing over west, so we quit early and came home.
The Merriman rodeo started at 6:30, but our outfit was an hour late. We watched saddle bronc, barrel racing, bull dogging, and bull riding (the most interesting). One bull went through a gate and kind of excited the crowds a little. The Sandhills Rodeo Company supplied the stock. We had a snack at Ward’s lunch stand and came home. We watched The Guns of Will Sonnett on TV.
