NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News Channel has pulled legal analyst Andrew Napolitano from the air after disavowing his on-air claim that British intelligence officials had helped former President Barack Obama spy on Donald Trump.

A person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was a personnel matter said Napolitano has been benched and won't be appearing on the air in the near future. Fox had no immediate comment Monday.

Napolitano's report last week on "Fox & Friends," saying he had three intelligence sources who said Obama went "outside the chain of command" to watch Trump, provoked an international incident. Britain dismissed the report as "nonsense" after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer quoted it in a briefing, part of the administration's continued defense of Trump's unproven contention that Obama had wiretapped him at Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential campaign.

FBI Director James Comey, testifying before Congress on Monday, became the latest official to state that no evidence has been found to support Trump's charge.

The president, when asked about the incident, said that "all we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television. I didn't make an opinion on it. You shouldn't be talking to me. You should be talking to Fox."

Fox's Shepard Smith, on the air Friday afternoon, quickly stepped the network away from Napolitano's claim.

"Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now-president of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way," Smith said.

Napolitano is a senior judicial analyst who has worked at Fox News Channel since 1998, and frequently comments on the Fox Business Network. He was a New Jersey Superior Court judge from 1987 to 1995.

Napolitano's removal from the air was first reported in the Los Angeles Times

I respect The judge alot more then Smith, but this shows that someone is pulling some strings behind the scenes.. and they (fox news execs) do not appear to be wanting to stand up for the "now-president", or the judge.

it is going to be four very long years if this crap keeps up. (hopefully  eight long years)

The Judge was reporting on what someone told him, 3 someones, and explaining how it could be done and he is taken off air SHAME ON FOX . The left gets away with their crap as they say Trump was wiretapped for months and if it is proved to be hogwash they claim Trump lied and move on to the next story like nothing was claimed by their reporters.

BTW Shep. is a scumbag that will go on TV and say what ever he is told to say if it means he is on air but Bret Beier needs to be looked at too. He pre-taped an interview with Paul Ryan the other day and got him to admit he was told about the request for a FISA warrant and nothing came of it/ nothing was found. When Trump commented on the Bret/ Ryan interview he backtracked and said that was not what Ryan said. BULL I watched it and I remember Tucker and his guests talking about what Ryan said in that interview. Bret even said he asked Ryan about the FISA thinking it would be nothing and was likely going to cut that part out of aired interview but after what Ryan said Bret repeated the question twice to make sure he was hearing Ryan right. It was then he decided to leave that question in and aired it. If it was nothing then why did Bret ask it three times and leave it in air interview? The Media needs to be held accountable for what they air as if they are spreading crap everyone has a right to know they have nothing to back up their claims. That interview was what it was Ryan claimed he was told about FISA request and nothing came of it he repeated it 3 times. Everyone including Trump has to realize that the media will report anything if they think they have the scoop of the day, the problem will be figuring out just how many times something is reported before
