New Orleans police are investigating the shooting death of a 29-year-old man in the Hollygrove neighborhood late Wednesday night. He was the fourth shooting victim to die in about six hours.

Police responded to the shooting, which happened about 11 p.m. in the 4000 block of Hamilton Street, according to Officer Garry Flot, a department spokesman. They found the victim suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's name has been withheld pending notification of his family.

The deadly evening began just after 5 p.m. when police were called to the scene of a double shooting in the 7th Ward. Martin Howard, 26, and Eugene Miller IV, 35, were gunned down in the 1900 block of Lapeyrouse Street.

About four hours later, police were called to the scene of a deadly shooting in the St. Roch neighborhood. About 9:15 p.m. a 53-year-old man was found in the 2200 block of Urquhart Street suffering from several gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

OT I was watching a police show last night ...they had to go in this small town and take down the corrupt sherriff. He went from local boy to where he was killing those who would dare talk to the State police about his crimes.

Stone Moutain is a HUGE attraction in Georgia. They have laser light shows and pack the house every weekend. Especially on Cross-Burning Weekends. :lol:

Confederate Memorial Carving

The largest high relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving, depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain's surface.



In 1912 the carving existed only in the imagination of Mrs. C. Helen Plane, charter member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). The Venable family, owners of the mountain, deeded the north face of the mountain to the UDC in 1916. The UDC was given 12 years to complete a sizable Civil War monument.

Three sculptors worked on the carving during its creation. Gutzon Borglum was hired in 1915 as the carving consultant, and in 1916 he was appointed carving sculptor by the Stone Mountain Monumental Association. Borglum envisioned a carving with seven central figures accompanied by "an army of thousands." He was not able to begin work on the carving until 1923 due to funding problems and World War I.

After blasting away large portions of the mountain with dynamite, Borglum was able to complete the head of Lee on January 19, 1924. In 1925 a dispute arose between Borglum and the managing association. As a result of the conflict, Borglum left, taking all of his sketches and models with him. Borglum went on to carve the famous Mount Rushmore sculpture in South Dakota.



Augustus Lukeman, the second sculptor, resumed work on the project in 1925. Lukeman's carving included the three central figures of the Confederacy on horseback. By 1928 (the original deadline) only Lee's head was complete and funds were depleted. The Venable family reclaimed their property, and the massive granite mountain remained untouched for 36 years.

In 1958 the state of Georgia purchased the mountain and the surrounding land. The Georgia General Assembly created the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. In 1960 the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Advisory Committee was comprised of six internationally known figures in the world of art. A competition was held, and nine world-renowned sculptors submitted designs for a new sculpture.

In 1963, based upon recommendations by the Advisory Committee, the Stone Mountain Memorial Association chose Walker Kirkland Hancock of Gloucester, Massachusetts to complete the carving. Work resumed in 1964, and a new technique utilizing thermo-jet torches was used to carve away the granite. Chief carver Roy Faulkner, a marine veteran with a talent for using the new thermo-jet torch, was able to remove tons of stone in one day. For over eight years Park guests could see and hear the workmen and their jet torches.

The figures were completed with the detail of a fine painting. Eyebrows, fingers, buckles and even strands of hair were fine-carved with a small thermo-jet torch.



The carving is actually much larger than it appears from Stone Mountain Park's attractions. Workers could easily stand on a horse's ear or inside a horse's mouth to escape a sudden rain shower. A dedication ceremony for the Confederate Memorial Carving was held on May 9, 1970. Finishing touches to the masterpiece were completed in 1972.

More victims discovered in Pa. dungeon case, police re-open related case

The case of four disabled adults found locked in a Philadelphia basement has grown into a national, in-depth investigation with ties to Norfolk.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia police announced 10 more victims have been discovered. They range in age from two to 19 years old. They all appear to be related to either the suspects who are already in jail or the victims found earlier in the week.

One of the four in the basement is Herbert Knowles who vanished from Norfolk three years ago.

Investigators say the suspects collected cash from the victims' social security checks.

Authorities announced a fourth suspect on Wednesday. 32-year old Jean McIntosh is believed to be the daughter of the scheme's accused ringleader, Linda Weston.

That landlord, who did not want to be identified, said Weston received multiple government checks while at the house.

Alleged basement dungeon ring-leader Linda Weston terrorized her younger brothers and sisters, forcing them into incest and prostitution, her family said today.

Linda Weston's siblings were still so frightened of her that they spoke only on the condition that their names not be revealed.

"She would force my younger brothers and sisters to have sex. She would have sex with my other brothers and sisters," a brother told ABC News affiliate WPVI. "She said, 'Look, make them have babies, we can get more money.' It could be a brother or sister in her care."

Weston, 51, is charged with being the ring-leader in a kidnapping and illegal imprisonment case for locking four mentally handicapped adults in a basement with no food or bathrooms, beating and torturing a niece of hers whom she kept locked in the closet, and stealing the identities of more than 50 people.

"By calling her evil is speaking nice of her," the brother said.

The family says they did not go to police because they were in fear of their sister.

"We were beyond terrified. We knew what she was capable of doing, so we never challenged any of it," a brother said.

Also charged with the basement dungeon crimes are Weston's daughter Jean McIntire, 39, Weston's boyfriend, Thomas Gregory, 47, and Eddie Wright, 49.

Philadelphia police said they are working to identify other possible victims of Weston's schemes.

They are also investigating whether Weston forced the mentally handicapped victims in the basement to have sex with one another, which produced two children, ages 2 and 5. Police said the 2-year-old was so malnourished it had the appearance of a 6-month-old.
