my father recently passed away and going through his things i found a belt buckle with a bronc rider on it...top banner says C.T.A. 1939 bottom banner says Odessa Texas.
he rodeo'd in his youth before going off to war and i have heard some WILD tales of those days......was wondering if he won this buckle in a rodeo or off some cowboy in a poker game????? can anyone tell me how to get this info???
my dads name was Clinton Leone from Beaumont Texas (winnie/fanett area)

Here's a website that mentions it. Go to the third paragraph CTA stands for Cowboy Turtle Association.

Here's another one about the CTA.

Can't seem to find anywhere that has records of actual rodeos and winners.

They have held rodeos at Odessa for as long as it's been a town. Not far down the road is Pecos....where it's claimed that they have the World's first Rodeo. So I wouldn't doubt that they gave buckles for events back then. But I don't know how or who to contact to find records that far back. Maybe newspapers would have had the listings of winners???

Ok from what I can find out....the newspaper in Odessa back in 1939 was called "The Odessa Bulleton".

Texas Tech University - Southwest Collections/Special Collections Library has them on microfilm. You might try calling them to see if they have any with stories on the CTA Rodeo.

I didn't find anything about your Dad but sure had fun looking. Some interesting stuff.
Might be one of those question we always figured we should have asked sooner then later. :)
