Neither Pro-Rodeo Or Ranch Rodeo Talked About Much Here

It's a special time of year for the real cowboys in Vegas. Sounds like fancy happenings there. It's a special time of year for us, too - we doctor calves every day. We could jet off to the rodeo, I suppose, but we sure would have a lot to drag off when we got back. So, we just stay here and doctor calves. Every day. Lucky they don't give a **** what we wear.

I watched every go round of the NFR from the comfort of my recliner. Didn't cost me a dime. I just had to be home by 6:00 to catch the first bareback bronc. That wasn't much of a problem when it is dark at 4:30. I will admit that I had to leave the sale early on the first day of the rodeo. But that was a sacrifice I was willing to make.

It never made sense to me that some spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to attend it, then watch it on a big screen in a casino lounge. Nothing like the comfort of home for watching it and easy to put on pause for interruptions. I hate gambling and excessive drinking, so I avoid Las Vegas.

I looked up tickets available for 2022. When I found them they cost about $200 +/- a seat. Up to $800 a seat if you want to rub elbows with the rich and famous. My wife the tightwad said well we will be taking that off the bucket list. I said well one performance some time. Drive down. Spend the night. Check out Cowboy Christmas. Go to the rodeo. Another night in the hotel. And then get out of town. On the other hand we both absolutely hate big cities so maybe I will just watch from my recliner.

It didn't bother us to spend the money for flying, car rental, hotel and food. And, at times, the way the inside of the Thomas-Mack Center looked, spending money wasn't much of a concern for those fans either.

We like gambling, but only on $1 or less slots. Absolutely no cards or dice stuff. And, we love breakfast and supper buffets. MGM and South Point had terrific ones!

The NFR was a major hit this year and South Point Hotel/Casino really showed that as well as the crowd at the Thomas-Mack.

I been doing paper work on a bunch of old broken mouth cows I bought this time last year. I spent over $27,000 on old cows. Who needs to go to Las Vegas to gamble? As I said neither one of us likes cities or crowds. We don't drink. Part of the problem is what do you in Vegas when the rodeo is not going on? You said Cowboy Christmas was a bust. We rarely go out to eat. If we did the Haines Steak House is top of the line and only about 35 miles or so from home.

There is a good reason it is rarely mentioned here. This is a ranch forum that deals with daily life on the ranch, not the few times a year ranchers can get away for entertainment. The real ranch rodeos are the ones without an audience and mother nature is the timekeeper. There are no second rides. No one calling your name and giving you an award.

If you read the recent branding thread with photos, you would know that several here have been to real ranch rodeos recently where calves were branded, vaccinated, and some castrated. No one was presented awards for roping or chute operation. No applause from a paying audience. Neighbors came together and helped each other without competition or compensation. That is what this forum is about and the reason I feel at home here.
