The whole story seemed kinda ' odd'...as for #1 I'd NEVER told it   and #2 don't ask what ya should'a done...after the fact.... :???: :???: :???:

My uncle had this same type of problem with the neighbors bull and cows busting in his fences and he did something similar to "cure" this problem.

It took all the $$$$ he had and practically an act of GOD to keep him outta jail for it.

Husbands grandfather had a similar problem years ago. A red angus bull kept getting in with the yearling heifers.
He called the guy each time the bull showed up. Took the owner longer and longer to get his bull out.
It took 1 horse, 1 tractor and a sharp knife to take care of the problem. And a phone call telling the guy to come his his steer.

Back in 2000 there was a black bull on the loose. He chased a neighbor up on his porch, if his dog's hadn't chased the bull out the guy could have been seriously hurt.
Owners of the bull made no effort to get him in for several weeks.
Since I am the EMS and Fire head out here. I asked the Sheriff if I could shoot the bull if he charges me if I'm on a call. Brand inspector called me and the fight began.
It all ended with bull finally being caught and shipped.

CA dig a big hole and move on.

I may catch hell for this but here goes anyway! Are you kidding? You shot your neighbors bull because he crawled out and maybe bred some cows? The excuse was you couldnt find the neighbor and arent cowboy enough to rope/trap/corral a 750 pound calf? I am glad we arent neighbors! I have good fences, keep my cows where they belong and excpect the same from my neighbors. But i can't imagine calling one of them up to say "Shot your bull today!" I think maybe owning cattle ought to reason enough to know how to work them! And if you can't catch a 750 pound bull calf with a $5000.00 dollar horse maybe ya ought'a start in the goat buisness! Or maybe ya paid way too much for a horse! Life is way too short to have a come apart over something silly like this! You have purebred cows and this calf bred a couple! So you shot it! Hope it works out for ya and you don't end up in handcuffs or in a lawsuit! I didnt mean to sound condescending or arrogant. I am just simply baffled that it came to this outcome between two "ranchers"! Sorry if I riled any feathers! :(

My son was reading the posts today and replied for me and now it is my turn. The animal in question was a bull. Definition of bull is has his testicles intact. But what is the definition of a good bull.

In my book it is a bull that is structurally correct, has all the right attributes to be happy with the off spring. Giving shade was a weak part of this bull, as you could split a rain drop on his back. As far as structure, hard to tell at two hundred yards running. Did he have a good mother, who know, will find out tomorrow as it appears that he may be a stolen animal. Tests will be done. The tentative old owner is coming in AM. Apparently he lost an animal like this last fall, pasturing next the first owner in question. Confused yet well there is more.

In Canada we don't have the access locally to all the cheap livestock drugs and parasite control you do. We you run a clean herd and try to keep it that you are very careful what you bring in and what you treat with to be sure that other concerned cattlemen can be assured that you are doing that right. Give you a break down, Ivomec, $275 dollars a bottle. Treats 80 cows, Bova sheild 3.00 bucks a dose I think, find out because were doing cattle on weekend. So lets see re ivomec 320 cows, 320 calves, fare expense and time involved. The Bova Sheild works but what about Trich. Oh that is right it could wipe out a considerable part of your herd. If you go to the local market and by the cheap scabby ones to replace it wouldn't be that bad. But if your in the purebred business and do spend considerable time and money to develop a good herd trich could be expensive. For those of you that have your off farm jobs and don't rely on total cattle income, come walk a mile in my shoes.

By the way as far as court bring it on because I did offer to buy the bull, as he lay there.

And for the comments about the fences, he would put his head down on the run and wipe out up to nine posts at a time, bush is very abundant here and to have a clean area to throw a loop in limited. My neighbors have more cheers than nays. I should feel better, but my Ford New Holland TM 130 burnt up tonight in the field, so it was a Hell of a weekend.

Where do you get CHEAP livestock drugs etc???? In ANY country?????

This whole mess sounds crazy and confusing.

I'm with H on this one....hope you don't land in jail.

You must have some small cows if a 750 lb calf could breed them.

My ol' big gals would've laffed at him and prob beaten him up!!!

This sounds like a problem we had once. My dad called the law each time he got in and finally they ask my dad if he had a shot gun and he said yes well burn him with some bird shot. Well he shot him from about 50 yards away and the bull fall like a rock. One BB hit the heart and killed him die. So he call the law back and told them what happen they said dig a big hole and put him in it and we will never say a thing. A week later the guy came by looking for his bull my dad said he happen seen him in a few day. I was 10 when this happen but remember it like it was yesterday, because it was my 20 gage shotgun that my dad used. It's funny at the things you can remember from a kid. I have never shot a cow or bulls because of this but a good hot fence has work for me.

Any idea what caused your New Holland to burn ?
On the bull deal, sometimes you have neighbors that just wont do the right thing, then the cattleman to cattleman attitude changes,I have had lots of problems with strays bulls and cows, some worked out good, some not so good,I hauled one long horn home 3 times,he did'nt make the trip the 4th time..................good luck
