Our vets daughter bought another steer from us for 4-H. He was born to a 5yo cow, BW 82#, WW 632#.

What are your thoughts?

I snapped these pictures just the other day. They hadn't been fed yet. we are keeping him until she can get over here to get him.
We are feeding our calves oat hay, alfalfa/grass mix and ground barley. They have free choice Nutrilix 12-12 mineral, salt block and a Nutrilix mineral tub.
After this weekend we are going to turn the calves out into a small pasture, but will continue to feed them.

Not a real "showy" steer, but he ain't too bad. He's a little wasty up front; by that I mean carrying a little extra leather; and that takes away from his overall look. Also a little short necked. I could do with seeing him have a couple shots of muscle in the quarter and maybe a tick more gut. However, he is also empty in that pic, and looks to have enough mid-rib. He'll make an OK 4-H steer, and looks like he'll feed just fine, esp. from the weaning weight I saw.

I hate "Judging" others cattle but here go's.

What MTY calls wasty I call loose hided. I don't mind that as they seem to grow into it. Seem to have a pretty good top line and should grow into a pretty nice steer.

BMR, just to clarify, I'm in livestock judging and tend to nit pick a little too much. But trust me, after getting a talking to by one of my coaches, you'll want to find EVERYTHING right or wrong about cattle, sheep, and hogs.

I hear you. I like what I like and can pick the good ones but hate pointing out this and that. It is a acquired skill and I don't envy any livestock judge.

Exactly my thoughts
Cut his Head and Neck "off" (Nice Steer) but not for the Show Ring

Thanks for the responses.
That girl sure does love Herefords. :D

OK myt what would you change? If I didn't want to know I wouldn't be asking.

I'll tell you what I would like to see.
More muscle on the hind end. More thickness through out the length of him.

Well, like I said, he could use a few shots of muscle in that butt. He could also be a bit deeper, but some of that comes with age. Give 'em a little more width throughout. Then....... Take that head and neck and put him on a good one. He needs a smaller head and a much longer neck. If he had all those, he'd be a perty nice steer. As he is, it looks like he'll feed fine.

canadian we already shipped the rest.
The girl that picked him likes Herefords, she was given the option of picking calves from the "clubbers" as she calls them, but came back to ours.
She was offered steer calves from 8 different breeders.

If you had watched this years 4-H show and sale you would have seen why she likes ours. So many of the steers there were nasty tempered and a few even got out of control. Her brothers liked to kick at you if you got too close. The biggest problem she had with her steer was when he got into the shade he didn't want to move.
She won Reserve Junior Showman and the Kelly Moline Memorial 4-H award.

Thanks myt. Better to ask questions and learn then to sit in silence and be ignorant. :D
Trying to improve our herd so your imput is appreciated. Sometimes otheres can see problems you don't.

Well, I appreciate that you took a kid's advice. EVERY animal out there is gonna have one thing or the other either wrong with it due to how it's put together or on preference. Mostly, preference would be the problem. :? But I can understand about why she wants a gentle one over a one of them Clubby calves. Those Maines and Chi's tend to be a little on the "alert" side. :D

Doesn't bother me if you are a "kid". If you know more about something then I do I would rather learn. You know you never stop learning, it's when you refuse to learn and ask questions that you run into problems.
