Northeast MT is setting new records- altho its not a record I'm enjoying...Still snowing today- and they say we could get another 5-6" during the day....

That has to be getting old! Baker got 4-5" last night on top of what
they already had. It wasn't as bad as last year, but it might be now.

It's been a looooong winter!

It was just a miserable day out there. I thought I forgot my coat this morning. This afternoon I put on heavier outer pants and that helped but NO sun snow sky and ground all looked the same. The cows were camped up on the far side of their winter grounds so the hay was hauled in three trips across. The Hfrs just stood in the coulee looking for a while this morning wondering if they should bother coming out in the breeze for hay.

But I didn't get a speeding ticket so it wasn't so bad after all.

Well it just finally quit snowing here around 5PM.... Some areas around here ended up with close to a foot of new snow....

Only good thing is the winds weren't too bad (15-25) so it didn't create too big of drifts-- but its hard just getting around even where there isn't drifts....
Now the temp is dropping...Right at 0- supposed to get 20- 35 Below next 3 nights with Thursday being the first day we see temps back up to 0 ...

Hopefully the sun comes out- so a guy can see some shadows- and make out ground from sky- and ditch....
Grandma stuck the Suburban in the ditch yesterday morning- just because she couldn't tell where the road was....

OK! A question from Flat Lander

I recall stories years ago about "Air Drops" to feed Freezing/Starving Cattle in the north country - I don't hear those kinds of stories now...

What are you doing different?

We are at -12 right now. You know it's cold when 3 cats are all curled up on the bed together.
Good thing I left my electric blanket plugged in, hubby will be stealing it tonight though.

OD/NT to answer your question...it's due mostly to the machinery. 4WD
tractors, catapillers and the like that enable ranchers to get to their
cattle. Not that air drops might become necessary again if it doesn't
stop snowing............... . But mostly, ranchers can reach
livestock because of the machinery available now. Years ago
they just couldn't get to the animals by land. Thanks for the
reminder of how different things are today. Much, much better.

Yep- and many in this country not only have the big equipment- but the snowblowers to fit on the big tractors too...(Only problem with the blowers is all the rocks in this country that do he!! on shear bolts and blower blades)....But they will go thru some deep snow....

While I only have 2 smaller 2 wheel drive loader tractors, that easily surfice most normal years - my cousin has a big Cat loader (that he mounted JD grapple forks on)- and a Cat road grader- and every time he goes by to get to his cows to feed he opens us up enough where we can get in and out- and we can clean up the rest of the yard/haypens with our smaller loader tractor...And he also has 2 old track Cat dozers which only get started on bad years (has used both this year)...
And thankfully he has kept things open for a couple of other neighbors too....

OD/NT-- if I get some nice weather- I'll get some pictures of the trails they've had to plow with the Cat dozers to get the cows fed......

I think it's kinda funny. Normal winter here you guy's could be Minnesotns after your training session. Most everyone has a Front wheel assist tractor here for normal winter feeding. Some guys have log-skidders for tough winters I have my 1805 Massey for tough sledding days. And it is parked 30' from the electric plug just in case.Just think January is over now.

Thanks for the article, OT. Wildlife are sure having it tough up there.
I feel really sorry for them. Then I read about the FWP allowing
ranchers to feed the birds and get reimbursement. We have
lots of deer in our haystacks now, and have in other years. You
never hear of ranchers being reimbursed for feeding the deer. :x

Don't know if you can see it, but there is a buck deer in
this picture who has lost one of his horns.

and to think that just a few short years ago the politicians were worried about lack of snow.

If anybody is interested in some of their worries, there's a video at the link

By most of your standards 18 is not cold, but that is what it is at my house this morning, I believe that that is the coldest I have ever seen it, on the valley floor.
Have seen freezing before and mid 20's but never 18 f

My old bones are not used to that
LOL

I hope this character is wrong.... :???:
In Summary---Overall, Bastardi is predicting three or four of the next five winters to be colder than normal for much of the U.S., based on trends observed in La Niñas throughout history.

Except he was right on with his fall/winter forecast so far this year..

FH FWP doesn't care. Dealt with deer for years and getting told to put up fences, but no suggestions for how to get through the drifts they cause.
Dang deer crapped all over the hay and you feed to the cows they can get sick.
