A proposed beef processing plant just south of Aberdeen could take another step toward reality today.
The Aberdeen City Council and Brown County Commission will jointly consider final rezoning of the property at an 8:45 a.m. meeting. The meeting will be at the Brown County Courthouse Annex, 25 Market St., Aberdeen.
Last week, the city and county jointly approved first reading of a request to rezone the property from agricultural to unrestricted industrial.
According to paperwork filed with the Brown County Register of Deeds Office, H&S Land and Livestock owns 101.4 acres just west of the Aberdeen wastewater treatment plant on which the plant might be built. Brett Bill, Aberdeen city planner, said only about a quarter of the land needs to be rezoned. The rest is already zoned unrestricted industrial, he said.
Both the city and the county need to approve the rezoning request because the land - near the intersection of 135th Street and 387th Avenue - is within three miles of the Aberdeen city limits.
It's expected that the beef plant would employ about 500 people with wages starting at $12.50 an hour and benefits worth an additional $9.50 an hour. Officials also say the plant could process 1,500 cattle per day when in full operation. Other details about the undertaking have been scarce, although more answers are expected to be shared at today's meeting.
About 55 people attended last week's joint city/county meeting at which first reading of the rezoning request was approved. Comments by audience members were roughly evenly split.
Paperwork filed with the county shows the 101.4 acres were sold this spring by Dahme Construction to H&S Land and Livestock. It doesn't indicate who is involved in H&S Land and Livestock.
