Had to get out my backup baler it has'nt been used in 4 years and I have ran 320 bales thru it in the last 2 weeks with only one problem and that was a 3"x6' piece of wood that clogged up the rollers.

What, ya don't like highlands? Doubt I would ever own one but I always thought those real old type breeds were pretty cool... I knew a few folks who had them but I am out of touch with them.

Wait till they grow in their winter coats ;)

Those cows are on the place I'm haying now.I never could understand why out of all the breeds of cattle someone would choose.

Hate to admit it, but my dear ol' dad used to have a good sized bunch of Highland cows. Looked just like those in your photo, Denny. Can't say that he ever really had his finger on the pulse of the industry, however. Luckily that phase didn't last too long. One word that describes their advantage over most any other breed is "Hardy". I don't know of another cow that can take the cold and rough country like a Highland cow. Those ol' girls are pretty tough and even good natured, but can get a little hooky at calving time. Course you won't need to pull any calves, as evidenced by their design. Little teddy-bear calves of all colors including red, black, yellow, grey, etc.

When it comes to converting feed to pounds of beef, well now that's another story.

One friend of Dad's did buy some steer calves from him once to try to make roping steers. Failed at that venture as they were just too short and dumpy to ever run fast enough to warrant a chase!

One fella 25-30 miles from us has alot of them in his commecial herd. He says every commercial cow taking a Western Canadian winter should have 1/4 Highland blood in her or more. He used to be a purebred Limo breeder too. Anyone that teases him about his Highlands and Kyloes gets a quick earful about how much he makes off of their carcasses through his direct marketing in meat shops and such.

If you saw his crossbred females, you'd have a tough time teasing him though. Even the ones with some horn left on them are easy on the eyes. Crossed up with a Limo or Galloway bull, then back again with either as a 3-way, it makes one helluva cow.

I can just hear the neighbors talking now if we had them cute cattle on this place... I wouldn't mind having one or two just for conversation and put them in the pasture next to the highway..so all could see...Now your horse would defintly fit into my herd...we take all colors! Thanks for showing us the pictures...sure enjoy em.
