new poem 4/06

I was visitin' with a friend this evening and he mentioned something that I'd thought of earlier in the day, while out ridin' and checkin' on these new yearlin's that just come in. So I wrote this up this evening. Still a rough draft, but I thot' I'd put it out here for comments and critisizim.

Please do me a favor and read it out loud. Cowboy poetry is meant to be heard out loud and not just read silently. Thats how it's supposed to work and it usually flows better. Thanks.

Green and White

Springtime on the high plains
can put you on the fight
but there’s somethin’ about the colors
of vivid green and white

April grass has started
the sun shines warm and bright
then a blizzard passes thru
and along comes the green and white

The wind screams like an eagle
and your innards get plumb tight
but now we’ve got some moisture
cuz' of all that green and white

Calves born during snow storms
can make the weaning average light
but without moisture there's no grass
so I appreciate this green and white

When the winds finally do subside
the sun chases away the night
there’s lots of work to be done
because of that green and white

There’s bound to be fences down
wire that needs stretched tight
I slop thru’ mud and muck
while gazing at green and white

As the sun melts the snowfall
the breeze still packs a bite
horseback I survey natures palette
her artwork of green and white

:)

As your pen and paper collide,
Results are up tight and outta sight.
Even the air seems fresher now,
Cheers to the green and white. :)

Send me a pm with your address and I'll send you a copy ACS.

If your poetry is choppy, maybe you need to work on the meter. Meter is the rythym of the words. I try , as do most poets, to have the same meter in each line as another line. If your interested, give me a pm and I'll try and make it plainer.

I like your poetry.

That's the beauty of it, when the green starts to show up, it's usually warmer. I suppose it was 50 degrees today and real nice, with a jacket. Of course, you need to either thin or thicken your blood, for that to seem warm.

Ain't it funny, that in the spring when it get up to 55 or so, it seems so warm and in the fall when it drops to 55 or so, you freeze your hip pockets off?

No, not that kind of meter. :p

When you read good cowboy poetry out loud, you can hear the hoof beats. That's the meter. Sometime the hooves are at a walk and sometimes at a trot and ol' Baxter gets them plumb up to a real fast run at times!

Some of mine, I think the horse must be limping a little here and there.

Good one JB, flows very well, and I really like the green and white. I cannot believe how good this country looks, now that it is only green. OK the only reason I'm on the computer right now is changing a couple of lines on another. If I post it as a new topic I'll probably get shot at by some people on this forum. If I hide it in here, maybe nobody will notice.

WORKING WITH WOMEN

Now one of the problems us ranchers have to face
Is finding someone to help us, when we have to win a race.
This has gone on forever, my Grandmother was the first that I recall
Called out for corral duty, as Grandpa needed a little help, was all.

It always started out easy, no matter what the fuss,
He’d call up all of the grandkids, every single one of us.
It was usually doctoring pinkeye, or putting horn weights on,
Didn’t matter the reason, we knew our day was gone.

Along about half way through, it would never fail,
Things would start going wrong, Gramps would get a knot in his tail.
He would start yelling, cussing at all of his free hands,
Bout that time Granny, she would make a stand.

The louder he’d be yelling, the louder she yelled back.
This is about when we knew, the train had jumped the track.
She would just walk off, calling him a louse,
She’d walk that half mile home and go back into the house.

Now I know that men and women think different, don’t you see,
I don’t care what some womens libbers have been preaching to me.
Men do things their way, women do their own,
Can’t change Mother nature, that’s how the seeds were sown.

So you know I come by this genetically don’t you see,
There is simply no reason for the wife to get mad at me.
I can’t help it, must be the Irish, runnin through the vein,
I guy has to yell once in awhile, when tensions tend to strain.

I try to tell her, I have to yell above the bellers of the cows.
And sometimes it’s hard to hear, you know how the wind will howl.
She just takes it personal, when I have to raise my voice.
I just keep on explaining, sometimes I have no choice.

I tell her to “sort off the second one, she’s destined for a dinner plate”,
She thinks I said “I got the second one, open up the gate.”
So she spills the rest of the herd, and wonders why I’m mad,
My daughter who is helping is now also yelling at her Dad.

This is the only help that I usually have, can’t do it on my own,
And that is why in my old age, my philosophies have grown.
Unless I want to be out there, working like a two legged pup,
Working with wife and daughter, I better keep my mouth shut up
