Zimbabwean man sells donkey meat as beef

By Tom Johnston on 8/7/2007 for Meatingplace.com

A Zimbabwean man sold donkey meat to residents suffering from the country's food shortages, claiming it was beef, according to local media reports.

The unidentified man reportedly sold his wares out of a basket while walking the streets of an impoverished village near the country's border with South Africa.

"This man had an ear of a cow, which he was using to hoodwink residents into believing that it was beef he was selling," a buyer was quoted as saying. "Initially, I had my own reservations, as the meat did not look like beef until he showed me the ear of a cow."

The woman told reporters a neighbor told her that the meat wasn't beef, and the vendor ran off after residents confronted him.

Unfortunatly not the worst incident in recent months, with few productive farms still operating, much of the wildlife in the game parks decimated, and the government hindering the distribution of food aid from international charities, my daily sitreps from Zimbabwe are filled withsimilar and worse stories.

OT, the people in that situation, including the seller, are most likely in such dire straits that ANY meat serves them better than none, and the poor seller probably hated to butcher his transportation in order to take care of his family.

Your use of such a horribly sad situation to take a jab at Sec. Johanns must make you so proud!!!

Johanns was a dang good governor. I voted for him and, more importantly, would of voted for him again. However, as Secretary of Agriculture, he isn't worth a cup of cold spit. It shows to me that his job is just that of an order taker, but at least Veneman was dignified enough to decline to be a part of it anymore.
