We made the last little jag of our drive today. It was plenty cool at -10F when we opened the gate and pointed them down the road. We left the corral at 7:45 and it was still pretty dark thanks to the cloud cover. I mentioned to Phil the they must be pretty wild cattle if a guy has to sneak up on them in the dark!

They had a 1600lbs bale of oat hay and they cleaned it up. Can't blame them for being hungry. All they have had for water since Sunday morning was snow and they were ganted up a bunch. They had a hump in thier backs but they sure took to trailin' down the road.

Just a wire trap along a fence on the desert, but if corrals could talk this one could tell some tales.

If you happened to be listening close this morning, you may have heard a very faint, high-pitched cowboy yell go echoing along past ya. That was me celebrating when the sun burned through the clouds and started warming up my fingers. :D That's Wayne with his 2 great dogs, "rowdy" and "deets". Intermountain Power Project in the background.

We made great time today. Made 16 miles in 5 and 1/2 hours. They knew where they were headed and away we went. :D Been trailing them home like this for a decade now and they know theres a haystack and cold water waitin'.

Ol' Cisco had a frosty mane today. It warmed up to 7F by 1:15 when we hit the gate at home. But except for the first 2 hours it wasnt too bad weather wise. Funny how my left toes was warm in the sun while the right ones were chilly in the shady side.

Cisco wasnt the only critter with a little frost collection going on. :D Sorry Lazy WP, but my right ear is still hurting from the first day so i wimped out and covered my ears up. I know you probably think less of me now.   I just can't figure out where all the gray hair in my sorry set of whiskers came from? :???:

Phil and Wayne just following tails. They covered thier ears today too. We all decided looking like a frozen eared calf isnt the hip way to look!

South bound and down......

The last 4 1/2 miles are down a paved county road in Sugarville. Folks musta partyied pretty hard last night cause we only had 2 cars to deal with. Steaming full speed ahead.

Wayne is riding a nice 2 year old colt that is coming along nicely. They havent decided what to call him yet. It's down to 2 choices......Whiz or Tuffy

Turning the last corner and 3/4 of a mile to the finish line. Can almost smell lunch from here. I work pretty cheap. A Pepsi and a sandwich will get you most of a days work.

Hang a right just past the mailbox. Melanie was there to turn them to thier hacienda for the rest of the winter.

The tail-enders and the tail-ender tenders. I got a field promotion to left point given to me by myself. I am really moving up! :D

Standing in the home corral/wire lot. They tanked up on water and stood around looking tired and happy to be there. I know of 3 drovers who felt and looked exactly the same way.

Phil feeds all his calves after weaning til late February or so. His feedlot is well built and well thought out. Sure works great for feeding calves silage and hay.

Segregated into steer pen and hiefer pen. They looked pretty good for desert calves. Plenty of groceries and good genetics make fine beef.

Mostly black angus base on the cowherd with hereford influence. Bulls are black angus with a tad of maine and simmy influence.

This pen had more bacon and sausage influence. I enjoy that Phil raises of few pigs every year. That way i can enjoy a little bacon now and then when i buy one from him without having to smell one at my own place. :D

Another youngster Phil has in the remuda. This colt came from over to Fool Creek. He will be fun to watch grow into a horse. Sorry but he wouldnt pose very well for a picture.

He's a good looking little dude. We got em' home and it's a good feeling when ya close the gate behind them. I love the desert, even when it's kinda Canadian out there. I take pride in being a halfway decent hand and am honored to rub shoulders with great people like the Adam's. I really dont think i would choose to do anything else on earth. Thanks for tagging along. Hope you didnt get bored. Have a fine evening and a finer 13'.
