No Muslims at Black Eyed Peas concert

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Muslims in Malaysia have been barred from attending a concert by U.S. hip hop band the Black Eyed Peas sponsored by Guinness which is owned by the world's biggest spirits group Diageo.

The move comes after a Malaysian Islamic court sentenced a 32-year Muslim woman to be caned after she was caught drinking beer in a hotel and at a time when an opposition Islamic party has moved against beer sales.

The concert, part of celebrations of Guinness 250th birthday, asks on its website (http://www.arthursday.com.my) "Are you a non-Muslim aged 18 years and above?" and if the response is no, access is not allowed.

Muslims account for 55 percent of the 27 million people in this Southeast Asian country and are barred from consuming alcohol although the rules are regularly flouted, especially in big cities like the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia's Guinness Anchor which sells Guinness and other brands here had sales of 1.2 billion Malaysian ringgit ($340.6 million) in 2008.

Even without alcohol, foreign bands are subject to scrutiny. Earlier this week, the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) said it wanted Danish band Michael Learns to Rock banned from performing as it would cause immorality.

Since 2007, PAS, the country's second largest political group measured by party membership, has campaigned against performances by the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne.

as a Christian.. I want people to act respectfully and to "willingly accept the teachings of Christ...

as a decent person I want people to act responsible and to a higher standard..

as a citizen I want people to respectful and be bound the law and fulfill their duties as citizens.. by serving and voting.. and complying with just laws..

but to think a person could be caned for drinking a beer, or banned from a concert shows they do not want willing followers,. but only those bound by their law with out say, and that is wrong... and why I feel Islam is a dangerous religion.. especially if you enjoy an occasional beer and concert..

Doesn't sound much different than the local Baptist Church not allowing its children to attend the school's Christmas party back when I was in middle school, because a Led Zeppelin film was going to be shown.

I wish all of the fundamentalists, whether Christian or Muslim would find an island and all move in together.

Badaxe, there is a difference between a parent banning their children from something and a goverment banning it's citizens from something. The two can hardly be confused.

Maybe I misread it, but I didn't see anything in the piece claiming that the government of Malaysia was banning Muslims from attending.

I assume it is coming from religious authorities?

Edit: My bad:

In that case, you are absolutely correct.

Malaysia is supposed to have a secular government. They ought to know better.
