Nordforks

Any ranch supply store should have them. If not they can order them for you. I personally don't care for them as they are too heavy and wear a person out using them.

If it makes you more tired than throwing calves, then you are using them wrong. lol.

If you're bound and determined to take the fun out of your branding, check out Soapweeds invention. It's pretty slick and not nearly as hard on beer as conventional methods.

And if the weather isn't satisfactory, it's real easy to postpone our branding without being hard on the cook. :)

Soapweed,
That does look like a neat invention. I'm all for simplicity! I can usually manage cattle at a branding without problems, its managing people that I don't do too well at :D

RRoss,

Thanks for looking that up. I actually found someone who had a pattern and said he'd make me a set. We may be in for a snowstorm later this week and so I'm wondering if I'll get my branding done. No complaints though. It is nice to actually see water on the meadows, and more moisture is certainly welcome!

i would not try making them my self
i talked to the man that makes them and he told me that he uses cold rolled steel for part of it and hot rolled for part of it and it maked a big differrace in the way they work
they have to have the right angle and amount of spring or they won't work right
and if you make one and it is not right it will break and that is ugly when that happens
we ordered ours straight from him in idaho
and paid $65 each for them
and if you order 4 of them he will pay the shipping
thats what he did for us
and he gave me one for getting those guys in that area to use them and buy them from him
i still havn't found his number but if you still have not bought one let me know and i'll make a point to get it for you

Thanks Jerry H,

I'm going to try to get branded tomorrow, and I'll let you know how my homemade sets work out. I'd still like the phone number if you run across it.

Nord's pattern is ok, but I have seen the ones built by cow country, and they are much more lightweight, and simpler. I have two of the originals myself, but I think I would buy or make the cow country ones if I was to start over. Nord's do work better for calves with horns as you can put your foot on the outside to hold the calf still. I have the ph. # somewhere too.

Homemade Nordforks worked great.

I had a great branding yesterday. The weather was brisk in the morning, but warmed up to the low 50's. The wind even died off after a while which is rare for this place! Hope everyone else gets along good with their brandings too! Could someone tell me how to post smaller pictures?
