Northern Lights

Take a look outside tonight for the Northern Lights. CNN said Canada and the Northern US would see them tonight. I can see them here, but they're not much yet.

We spent the day drilling a well and putting up a windmill in "no man's land". It is rough country full of soapweeds and sandy hills. The well went bad three years ago, and I've procrastinated putting in a new one because I knew it would very difficult to accomplish. The well driller originally told me that he planned to "call in sick" when I wanted the well put in, but after three years he forgot and came anyway. :? :)

We got done putting up the windmill just a little after dark. The Northern Lights apppeared, and it was kind of a majestic show that filled us with awe and admiration for a little while. Then came the realization that the only way to get home was through the same six miles of rough sandy passes by which we had come, only this time there was no daylight in which to travel. The frost has completely gone out of the ground, and sandy trails became noticeably harder to negotiate with each truck that passed. My pickup was the only one of the four vehicles that didn't get stuck. We got a lot of use out of a couple big tow ropes, and finally were able to get two of the three trucks out. The other stuck truck is a project for tomorrow, and a four-wheel-drive tractor will be necessary for the rescue effort. :(

Anyway, the whole experience was an adventure. The pretty display of Northern Lights was one more factor that helped to make it quite a memorable day.
