Not many Mustangs-------

We thought the day would be a real success when we found the paint mare and her family grazing along the road before we ever got to Government Creek. We couldn't believe our good luck. The old mares second year colt, had a very new baby by her side, which is her second colt. Last year she had a palomino which is in the band today.

This new addition looks like he less than two or three days old, sill a little wobbley on his feet. He must have a absentee dad, as out of character as his color is. The buckskin mare is short the colt she had by her side in May. He had a odd looking mark on his neck the last time I saw him. I don't know if there is any connection.
They all looked a little poor for this time of year. They have a lot of fire damage to contend with, but I'm not sure that is the cause of their poor condition. There is still a vast amount of country out there. We drove the fifteen miles around Davis Mountain and only found another seven head of bachelor studs. There was an article in the paper about the BLM rounding up some of them because of the fires. I don't know if it happened or not. However we were short over a hundred head. If they are around, they are walking might light. No tracks around any of their normal water holes.

A good name for him might be "Sliver' not much more than a shadow.

Pretty pictures. Looks like there's been a rain to provide puddles along the road.

True,,, I wish I could convince myself that the rest of the mustangs (about 100 head) were watering in the puddles, but I think that would take a lot of puddles. Thanks for your comments.

Somewhat uncommon to have foals this time of year is it not?

That was my thought as well. Winter is not that far off.

Great pictures once again. Thanks for posting them!

We talked about that fact while we were taking the pictures. We wondered if he would make through the winter.

In the Documentary of "Cloud" the mustang on the Pryor Mountains, the author and resident expert on mustangs said that the birth control shots that the BLM are giving the mares are the cause of the late births of mustang colts. She has three Videos that I've seen on PBS TV and two books I've seen at the book store.

I hope they have a place or more to drink in this drought. That would be
terrible, for them to be thirsty.

Too bad about the buckskin colt. I guess they can't all live...

And man messing with mother nature again...making the mares foal
later in the year. I hate to think of that little feller not making it through
the winter.

Thanks Faster horses, for the comments....You and some of the others keep me interested in posting pictures. I think the Mustangs like to move around quite a bit. Some times traveling almost 20 miles in a day.
I think they must get a thrill out of running for running's sake, One time you spook them and they will run a half mile and the next time they might run ten miles. The BLM has piped water all around the flats. There are six water troughs around Davis Mountain where they normally run. The BLM guy told me that the had water further south east that I had ever found mustangs. Even as dry as it has been this year, they can find water. The first thing we do is check the water to find where they are watering.

I really enjoy the mustang pictures and comments. And they are one of few things my spouse has patience to look at on the internet! Along with videos for horse sales

Not that he needs those now. He got two really good horses recently after checking the videos' of them and bidding by phone during a sale. Even got the seller to deliver them. And the seller has called to be sure they are doing what we want!
