Not So Good Monday Mornin'

This is the most recent weather warning from Enviro. Canada. I was just out to the barn to throw some hay to our sale bull, and it definitely feels like -48. I thought I had bundled up a little too heavy, but by the time I was done chorin' I was ready to run for the house. Haven't seen it this cold since the winter of '96/'97, when I was working rigs @ -52 between Christmas & New Years. If you read below, Coronation is our closest weather center. They're bang on about us getting half the snow of other places. Our road is fairly clear, but north of us 20-30 miles they're saying the hiways are drifted over.

Alright, alright. These aren't my calves, but I've had them saved on my computer for a while. These are from Thorbardin Ranch at Buffalo, Wyoming. We won't get our first Highland babies until April, at least that's when the vet said our girls should calve. They're bound to be alot more colorful than these 2, since the cows were supposedly bred to a Hereford bull. I spent this weekend putting out extra hay with this storm moving in, and it was funny, I have to admit the Galloway and crossbred cows were glad to see me, but the 5 Highland cows just stood back in the bush watching. I went to check on them and they were chewing their cud or stripping leaves off of the buck brush & willows.

Sounds like we're next.  The snow is supposed to stay a bit north of us, but the temp is due to drop like a stone. It was minus 2 here yesterday, and we're supposed to get over minus 40 windchill by Tuesday.

Supposed to drive to Winnipeg tomorrow, but I'm going to chicken out on that one. The TransCanada west of Winnipeg is legendary when the snow blows. I've often wondered what tourists think of the miles of highway there laid out on flat prairie that has more reflective posts on the side of it than roads in the mountains. If they aren't there in the winter they would never know that sometimes that's the only way to stay on the road.

I think I'll stay home and do books instead and watch out the window. :D :D :D :D I didn't want to see that dentist anyway.

Absolutely Mrs. Greg, I've had the fireplace roarin' since 6:30. Our porch is kind of an ice box, and we have a pocket door between it and the kitchen that we close when it's real cold, makes a huge difference for keeping the rest of the house warm. This is the first time I've had to close it this winter. That wind is just nasty. I've been in -50 when it's calm, and I'd take that over -50 windchills anyday. I still need to go out and open a gate to let our calves in to their next set of bales, but everytime I step away from the fireplace I start to shiver.

Mine had drifted off the feedground so it took some coaxing to get them to move into the wind-that big old lead steer broke trail and the rest followed. I remenber feeding with horses on days like today it was tough but not going to be any worse than trying to get my buddy's tractor to start later. It was plugged in but not starting yet lol.

Although we get cold....this type of cold is THANK GOODNESS few and far between....-50 nothing likes that cold, vehicals if you can start them feel like your driving on square tires, eyelashes freeze together, breathing is not good, exposed skin freezes in a very short time...ya this is not good, add a blizzard to this :( :(

Pure ,gregs got our fire going too,he heard the power go off sometime in the night so got up and got it going,at least if the power goes off again we can huker in front of fire.

Just came back in from moving calves, had to let my digits warm up in front of the fire enough to type. Just like Northern said, they didn't want to move, I had to push the calves across an open 150yd stretch to get to the next bales, in another paddock behind some shelter. I've got 4 fall calvers in with them, so they led the way and the calves all followed.

When you get a doozy of a storm like this you can see why oldtime ranchers had stories about losing herds in coulees or ravines that were drifted over. My grandpa used to tell us about a neighbor that found his cows in the spring, frozen like popsicles in a coulee in the river valley. They got milling in there in a bad blizzard, and just got buried alive in snow. Grandpa was just a boy, but he remembered going with his Dad to help clean them out. Said they were piled on top of one another, like they'd just kept scrambling as others died under foot, and eventually all froze.

Good day to start doing my taxes. Gotta make sure my partners in Ottawa get their money in timely manner. They have some global warming programs to pay for and they are expensive.
