LITTLE ROCK, Ark.–As Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee had a hand in pardoning or commuting sentences of 1,033 people – more than his three immediate predecessors combined. Maurice Clemmons, the suspect in Sunday's slaying of four Seattle-area police officers, was among them.

As the Republican politician considers another run for the White House, Clemmons could become Huckabee's Willie Horton.

"In a primary between a law-and-order Republican and him, I think it could definitely be a vulnerability," said Art English, a political scientist at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Horton, a convicted killer, raped a woman and assaulted her fiancé while on release as part of a prison furlough program supported by then-Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis. Allies of Republican rival George H.W. Bush ran ads criticizing Dukakis, weakening his 1988 Democratic presidential bid.

On Monday, Huckabee offered little explanation for why he made Clemmons eligible for parole in 2000, when he was 11 years into a 95-year sentence for a teenage crime spree. Huckabee called the case a failure of the justice systems in Arkansas and Washington.

"If I could have known nine years ago ... would I have acted favourably upon the parole board's recommendation? Of course not," said Huckabee, now a Fox News talk show host.

Authorities believe Clemmons is still alive and has been aided by a network of friends and family since the coffee-shop shootings, a police spokesman said Monday night.

Police are also certain Clemmons, 37, was in a Seattle house on Sunday night, but was able to flee before police could contain the area. Police staked out the house overnight before determining early Monday that Clemmons wasn't there.

Clemmons claimed the crimes for which he was then imprisoned were committed when he was 16, during a seven-month spree after he moved from Seattle to a crime-infested neighborhood in Arkansas and fell in with the wrong crowd.

"I come from a very good Christian family and I was raised much better than my actions speak," Clemmons claimed. He said his mother's death changed his heart, because he now had to live with the knowledge that after all he had put her through he had missed an opportunity to make her proud of him before she passed away.

"I have never done anything good for God, but I've prayed for him to grant me in his compassion the grace to make a new start," Clemmons petitioned. "Now, I'm humbly appealing to you for a brand new start."

sadly I've heard to many cases of criminals who quickly return to crime and violence after getting a second chance.. enough to make me have little sympathy for those who claim to have changed..

but as a Pastor I am sure Huckabee's compassion often override his disgust with the common criminal... and that compassion was rewarded at times with even worse behavior..

it doesn't mean that criminals can't change it just shows that few do.. and compassion might not be the answer,

BTW this isn't the only case... there are others criminals, murderers and rapists, Huckabee was soft on who committed crimes as well after being released...

and the left should bring this up. and maybe then they can understand why GW Bush let so few escape the gallows.. dead rapists and murders crime spree is over.

Hey nono look at how many posts I have made in the last few weeks. Then go study all my posts and see how many times I HAVE BASHED BAD REPUBLICANS. or how many times I HAVE POSTED INFO ABOUT BAD REPUBLICANS.

You will even find where I called for a clean sweep in 2010 of all Democrats and republicans.

You might want to do a little study on the above issue the man was given an illegal sentence that Huckabee dealt with. Then do a study on what the Judicial system said about the sentencing guide lines.

Then do a little research and see how the current Arkansas administration did nothing while those that had him in custody recently begged Arkansas to violate his parole this begging took place for months. AS A MATTER OF FACT officilas from Washington state have said they will probably refuse any more interstate compact prisoners from Arkansas in the future nad if their states had bordered each other they most likely would have had a border war over this felon. Hope this enlightens you about who screwed up and is the cause of these 4 dead police officers.

Then there are 4 individuals that harbored him after he shot these 4 police officers. They should do his time and punishment for the crimes he committed. I don't wish anyone dead but this guy met the fate he deserved.

One more fact for you nono. Most crimes committed by democraps in power go unpunished. Just look at the current congress senate and presidential appointees. Would you care to discuss them we can have a real long thread . With probably a whole lot more looks and posts that you were strutting around about a thread you posted here while back.

nonothing, why must you always devalue yourself and your thoughts by calling people names. Don't try to say you are shortening farmer to boy, that would be childish. After all that is only three more letters. Now how long does it take to type three letters.

I was thinking about this last night a bit and was wondering why repubs are expected to shift left, to gain support, and then when they do, something like this happens. Then the libs jump on the person for their liberal policies.

This that make you go hmmm?

Watched an explanation by Huckabee on what happened. His decision only included reducing the guys sentence from 100+ years to 47. Then he was paroled (by board), broke his parole, and was not convicted.

Not sure you can lay any blame on Huckabee.

1) Huckabee reduced his sentence from 108 years to 47 yrs for a crime not involving weapons

2) the Parole board granted him parole after he had served 11 years

3) parole violation

4) prosecutor did not file the charges in a timely manner, so he was released

Not sure you can lay any blame on Huckabee.

looking back, it is easy to lay blame... and Huckabee played a part in the release of this scumbag.. so if your spreading blame around... he deserves his share..

I blame Huckabee, the criminal justice system, lax judges, and mostly.. I blame scumbag Clemmons for his actions and life as a scumbag.. someone should have locked him up and thrown away the key...

Clemmons was arrested when he was a junior at Hall High School for carrying a .25-caliber pistol on school property.

In 1989, a 17-year-old Clemmons and two other accomplices robbed a woman at midnight in the parking lot of a Little Rock hotel bar.

Clemmons was accused multiple times of displaying violent behavior during court appearances

Clemmons dismantled a metal door stop and hid it in his sock to use as a weapon.

In another incident, Clemmons took a lock from his holding cell and threw it at a bailiff, but missed and accidentally hit his mother instead

Clemmons was once accused of reaching for a guard's pistol while being transported to court.

The largest sentencing came in 1990, when he was given a 60-year prison term for breaking into an Arkansas state trooper's home and stealing about $6,700-worth of items, including a gun.

n March 2001, Clemmons violated parole by committing aggravated robbery and theft again

classified as "high risk to reoffend"

The Seattle Times referred to four days in May 2009 as the time when "Maurice Clemmons' behavior and mental state deteriorated".

May 9, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy responded to Clemmons' home after reports he was throwing rocks at houses, cars and people. When the deputy tried to enter the house, one of Clemmons' cousins grabbed his wrist. After a struggle, Clemmons emerged from the house and punched the deputy in the face, and assaulted a second deputy who arrived to help. Clemmons was placed under arrest and taken to Pierce County Jail, where he continued to struggle and told jail workers, "I'll kill all you bitches."[6][10] Clemmons was charged with two felony assault charges and two felony malicious mischief charges, and released from jail the next day after posting a $40,000 bail bond without seeing a judge

On May 11, around 1 a.m., Clemmons appeared naked in his living room and ordered two female relatives, ages 11 and 12, to fondle him. The two reportedly complied out of fear, and the 11-year-old fled the house afterward. Clemmons took the 12-year-old into his bedroom along with Clemmons' wife.[10] Clemmons repeatedly referred to himself as Jesus, and said his wife was Eve.[8][10] Clemmons released the 12-year-old girl after his wife begged him to let her go. However, at about 4 a.m. that same morning, Clemmons gathered his family back into the living room and demanded they strip naked together. He later left the house, claiming the world was coming to an end and that he was "going to fly to heaven". A family member called 911 and police found Clemmons at a nearby second house he was building, but Clemmons fled on foot and escaped. He failed to appear the next day for an arraignment on his May 9 charges. Child Protective Services investigated and substantiated the sexual abuse complaint.[10] Latanya Clemmons, Maurice's brother, told authorities he had undergone a change and was "not in his right mind".

Clemmons was arrested on July 1, 2009, after he appeared in a Pierce County court trying to have his bench warrant thrown out. He was charged with second-degree rape of a child, as well as being a fugitive from Arkansas.[10] At the time of his arrest, Clemmons made religiously themed comments and referred to himself as "the beast". He also told a police officer that Barack Obama and Lebron James were his brothers, and Oprah Winfrey was his sister.

then it gets worse... the only reason this man was released? ACLU..

nono you don't have the scruples to attack obama for the way he is destroying this country. So you whine about what someone might do if obama had done what Huckabee did.

Is there anything obama is doing you are unsatisfied with other than sending troops to Afghanistan? Your whining about something someone might do is pathetic. Get a grip and see how this country is being tossed to the muslims and Chinese as well as how we are rapidly becoming a third world country. Then of course lets not forget that obama has made each American man woman and child be responsible for 50 k in national debt each.

If you have no problem with this man up and write a check for your share of the national debt. I highly doubt you care or are willing to pay your sand your families share of the debt.

Get a pacifier and some pablum and get some rest.

here nono read this.

FORWARD TO ALL YOU CAN
Everyone of voting age should read these two books.. Don’t buy them, get them from the library before they are removed from the shelves…
>From Dreams of My Father: ‘I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.’

From Dreams of My Father : ‘I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘There was something about her that made me wary, a little too sure of herself, maybe and white.

From Dreams of My Father: ‘It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself: the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.’

And FINALLY, and most scary!

From Audacity of Hope: ‘I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’

If you have never forwarded an e-mail, now is the time to do so!!!

We CANNOT have someone with this mentality running our GREAT nation!!
I don’t care whether you are a Democrat , a Republican, a Conservative or a liberal,
We CANNOT turn ourselves over to this type of character in a President.
PLEASE help spread the word.
We have really put ourselves in harm’s way with this monster in disguise.

Like I said, "who is Huckabee"

obama is supposedly the most powerful person in the world, there is a big difference.

and if Huckabee should run in 2012, I'm sure this will come up then. As it should, during a campaign.

Huckabee commented on this on his show the other night and that even though he felt bad he had to follow the laws and weigh the evidence.
That said Huckabee was a Governor and maybe made a mistake in this pardon of this ONE guy

But nonothing Obama nominated this guy and the Dems appoved him to be the Attorney General

Attorney general nominee Eric H. Holder Jr. repeatedly pushed some of his subordinates at the Clinton Justice Department to drop their opposition to a controversial 1999 grant of clemency to 16 members of two violent Puerto Rican nationalist organizations, according to interviews and documents…

…President Clinton’s decision to commute prison terms caused an uproar at the time. Holder was called before Congress to explain his role but declined to answer numerous questions from angry lawmakers demanding to know why the Justice Department had not sided with the FBI, federal prosecutors and other law enforcement officials, who were vehemently opposed to the grants.

Some religious groups and influential individuals, including President Carter, had endorsed the commutations. But Clinton’s decision outraged law enforcement officials, who had tried to contain a bombing campaign in New York, Chicago and elsewhere in the 1970s and 1980s by groups seeking independence for Puerto Rico from the United States.

New interviews and an examination of previously undisclosed documents indicate that Holder played an active role in changing the position of the Justice Department on the commutations.

Holder instructed his staff at Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney to effectively replace the department’s original report recommending against any commutations, which had been sent to the White House in 1996, with one that favored clemency for at least half the prisoners, according to these interviews and documents.

And after Pardon Attorney Roger Adams resisted, Holder’s chief of staff instructed him to draft a neutral “options memo” instead, Adams said.

The options memo allowed Clinton to grant the commutations without appearing to go against the Justice Department’s wishes, Adams and his predecessor, Margaret Colgate Love, said in their first public comments on the case.

“I remember this well, because it was such a big deal to consider clemency for a group of people convicted of such heinous crimes,” said Adams, the agency’s top pardon lawyer from 1997 until 2008. He said he told Holder of his “strong opposition to any clemency in several internal memos and a draft report recommending denial” and in at least one face-to-face meeting. But each time Holder wasn’t satisfied, Adams said.

The 16 members of the FALN (the Spanish acronym for Armed Forces of National Liberation) and Los Macheteros had been convicted in Chicago and Hartford variously of bank robbery, possession of explosives and participating in a seditious conspiracy. Overall, the two groups had been linked by the FBI to more than 130 bombings, several armed robberies, six slayings and hundreds of injuries.

What say you nonothing should Holder be in any position of authority after he got pardons for these TERRORISTS?

I didn't suddenly become a liberal.. as a republican and a conservative, I not only feel Huckabee deserves the blame as well as others involved especially those who allowed Clemmons out recently..

when a person makes the issue about other posters and not about the facts of a case or issue, then the thread has already degraded and most who care about the issue just ignore it as I should have...

See Nonothing, not too many have put much thought into it. If he runs, it will probably come up then.

People are more worried about things that are definitely happening, like obama destroying the country.

Our monthly look at the 2012 Presidential race, due out Thursday, will show Huckabee’s favorability at 35/35, pretty much unchanged from 36/37 on our November poll. And not only does it show him once again as the Republican who comes closest to Barack Obama, but it also shows him coming closer to Obama than he has in any of the previous nine monthly polls.

Does that mean he’s getting a free pass on the Washington cop killings by an inmate whose sentence he commuted? Probably not. I’m sure that would be a massive liability if he did get into the 2012 Republican field, and used effectively against him by his opponents. But it’s a good reminder that the vast majority of Americans do not live and die by the 24 hour news cycle. Huckabee’s numbers haven’t changed because more than likely few voters who didn’t already have their minds made up about him are familiar with his connection to last week’s tragedy.

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2009/12/looking-at-huck.html

Looks like the Dems approve of his actions more than the Repubs.

Huckabee comes the closest, trailing Obama 46-45. It's interesting to note that Huckabee's share of the Democratic vote is up from 11% a month ago to now 16%, but his share of the Republican vote is down from 87% to 83%. There's a similar trend in his favorability numbers. Although they're pretty much unchanged overall from 36/37 a month ago to 35/35 now, he's dropped from 65% of Republicans seeing him positively to 57% but has increased from 13% to 17% with Democrats. We'll want to see if this trend continues before making any definitive conclusions, but it appears there's some possibility the publicity about his commutation of Maurice Clemmons brought a side of Huckabee out in the national spotlight that made him more popular across party lines but less popular within his own.
