Lt. Ehren Watada's ill-conceived attempt to avoid service in a combat zone does nothing to further the anti-war effort .
.Lt. Watada was likely advised by lawyers attempting to grandstand his case. Suggesting that Watada, a freshly commissioned officer, singly had the altruistic inspiration to act against an "illegal" war by refusing a legal order condemns the thousands who have served in the Gulf.
This onlyencourages others in the field to resist. Who is next: The pilot refusing to provide close-air support fire? The surgeon refusing to perform surgery? Encouraging resistance among troops is incitement of insurrection, endangering all in the war zone. There is a time for protest, and for veterans it's upon completion of honorable active duty, their voice then being supremely worthy of our attention.
This refusal could also be considered an act of treason therefore the posibility of a firing squad, but it will not be the lawyers or the supporters of his refusal that will be facing the time behind bars or the possibile death penilty.
A very misguided attempt at 15 seconds of fame.
