Obama: big Wall Street bonuses 'outrageous'
Thu Jan 29, 2009 2:33pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama believes the multibillion-dollar bonuses that Wall Street banks awarded themselves for 2008 are "outrageous", White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Thursday.

The New York Comptroller reported this week that Wall Street firms paid out $18.4 billion in bonuses to employees, despite receiving multibillion-dollar payouts from the government to save them from collapse in the face of the worst financial crisis in decades.

Gibbs told a news conference that Obama had a one-word reply when he heard of the reports: "outrageous".

And guess who was involved in developing the TARP program Oldtimer?

Tim Geithner the tax cheat that was so smart he was the only man to run the Treasury Department.

And guess who's been administering it- and promised transparency and accountability if their hands weren't tied by rules and regulations on it- but then just doled it our willy nilly- and refused to even tell Congress where it was going - Bush/Paulson...

The Republican controlled House tried to stop the bailout as written but the Dem. controlled Senate passed the plan without making sure it was a good plan?

Yes Bush and Paulson administered it but the plan had no safe guards and who developed the plan TIM. Why didn't TIM see things were going wrong he was the PRESIDENT of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City where all these Fat Cat as you call them were playing.

Wonder how much Paulson took with him when he left ofc this Jan??

Obama already has Geithner jerking some of the Bush/Paulson willy nilly handed out money back-- one from a bank/firm that took the money and spent it buying a new company CEO's jetliner instead of making it available to borrowers as it was intended  ....

Obama was just on TV ripping the WallStreet Fatcats a new rear end--not only did he call their actions outrageous-- but reprehensible and shameful... :)

Actually I give Barney and Nancy part of the blame for not holding tight on some of their requirements--but it was Bush and Paulson that wanted no restrictions, no requirements so their hands would not be tied in how it was doled out- and so they could do so faster....
Bush/Paulson said they would provide transparency and provide oversight-which they immediately failed to do....
I blame Barney/Nancy/Congress for being sucked in by another Bush "trust me" scam....
What a bunch of doofus's to believe GW or his Court of Fools could ever tell the truth or do what he says/promises

Banks participating in the CPP are subject to executive compensation restrictions under EESA. These restrictions require the Treasury to ensure that incentive compensation for senior executives does not encourage excessive risk taking that could threaten the value of the institution. In addition, executive bonuses may be forfeited if it is later proved that earnings were materially inaccurate.

The Fed had to come back later and add language that was not included in Nancy and Barney's Bill:

So if you all worked hard all year and as part of your compensation you recieved a big bonus, how many of ya would say no? Sorry, i cant take this income as it's to big? Really? How many of ya would tell the buyer that he's paying you too much and knock 20 cents off his offer? :???: I realize that bonus's paid on wall street are huge but that is part of that industry. And even though they are receiving tax payer bailout money did the bonus's not get earned? Just a thought! If i was 7 feet tall and was drafted to play pro ball i'd get all I could. I don't blame people for trying to better themselves. I blame government for telling people "they make too much money"!

You run your company nearly into bankruptcy- and need a government hand out to keep it from folding-- and you think you deserve a BONUS :???:

Remind me not to hire you-- after you forgot to water 100 cows and they died--you'd want a BONUS :???:

A lot of people wanted a say in the plan, the chance to debate alternatives, add things, take things away, but the leaders of the House and Senate would not allow any of that. Guess who those leaders were?
