Obama blues

A leading international ally of George W. Bush said yesterday the election of Democratic Senator Barack Obama as the next American president would mean a "victory for the terrorists" and leave the Middle East in chaos.

In a rare intervention by a foreign leader into U.S. domestic politics, Australian Prime Minister John Howard ridiculed a proposal by Mr. Obama to completely withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq over the next 13 months.

Mr. Howard's unexpected criticism of Mr. Obama -- an underdog candidate to win his party's presidential nomination -- stunned Democrats even as U.S. conservatives joined the attack on the Illinois senator's dovish foreign policy views.

How many troops do the Aussies have in Iraq?

"Australia, a staunch U.S. ally, sent 2,000 troops to take part in the invasion of Iraq and still has nearly 950 troops in and around the country."

I would hate to see the support if they were just mediocre allies.

We have a pres. who can't win a war, who can't control our own border, won't give border patrol the authority or protection, thinks loyalty to him over loyalty to the country/truth is important and this is the best spinmiester Karl Rove can come up with?

I can't imagine what we would have done without the Ausies over there. They lived near the pool and maintained it. They also got to carry the Steyer Aug-9.

This was not a cut to the Aussies who are actually there in Iraq.

I too share your appreciation of their efforts as I applaud the efforts of England, and Canada, some of our important allies, and I thank them.

It is just not proper for the head of a foreign government who has not the breadth of the stake that the U.S. has in Iraq to speak against domestic politicians who are duly elected and represent a view of their constituents.

I believe it was this guy who has a lot of questions regarding the wheat deal and arms to Iraq (not that the U.S. doesn't have a few questions to answer there too).

Next to the U.K. is not Australia's support more than any other nation in the world? Well maybe South Korea sent just a tad more.

We see how you libs can spin things, minimize the number of support using total figures, but not looking at in the context of all other Nations.

As I see it The two biggest helpers we have in Iraq is the U.K. obviously 1st then probably the Australians.

Not to mention around 20 other Countries have cut and run on us and they are staying to help.

Also what about troops the sent to Afghanistan, planes, ships etc.... I believe they are in process of sending some more troops over to Afghanistan at the moment.

Seems in a time when many Americans will not support their own efforts the Australians are doing more than their fair share as an Allie!
