While the left wingers are going nuts over this (some don't even think they should have an invocation  ) I think it may be brilliant strategy....

You can't expect to start bringing back together a nation that is more badly divided than I've ever saw it before, if you continue to drive wedges between the sides..
While I oppose the fearmongering and hatemongering of some of these rightwingnuts-and some that put themselves out to be ministers- they do exist and aren't going to go away...The country may be just about in such a disastrous state that its time for both sides to extend olive branchs and start working together on the most important issues....And what better way to begin doing it then thru God...Its not like Warren will be giving a political speach- its the invocation...

I just don't buy it for a minute as a genuine move to unite the country. I remember his "Clinging to their guns and Bible" comments that nobody was supposed to hear.

Apparently Reverend Warren does....

Rick Warren responds to controversy over his invitation from Obama
7:04 PM Thu, Dec 18, 2008

Through his Dallas-area public relations rep, A. Larry Ross, the Rev. Rick Warren has issued the statement below. It deals with controversy over his invitation to give the invocation at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration.

Statement by Dr. Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddleback Church
Regarding the Invitation from President-elect Obama to Deliver
the Inaugural Invocation
Lake Forest, Calif., Dec. 18, 2008

"I commend President-elect Obama for his courage to willingly take enormous heat from his base by inviting someone like me, with whom he doesn't agree on every issue, to offer the Invocation at his historic Inaugural ceremony.

Hopefully individuals passionately expressing opinions from the left and the right will recognize that both of us have shown a commitment to model civility in America.

The Bible admonishes us to pray for our leaders. I am honored by this opportunity to pray God's blessing on the office of the President and its current and future inhabitant, asking the Lord to provide wisdom to America's leaders during this critical time in our nation's history."

The flip on his supporters has already started.

The Gay supported him in the election and they are rewarded with a anti gay pastor at his inauguration. According to the news tonight they are not happy about his pick.

And they'll just need to get over it, won't they. I agree with what OT said on the subject...too bad there are those that want to make something out of it...on BOTH sides of the aisle, Tam.

Actually to me it is not surprising-- as everything I have read about Warren is that as a Christian, he is not anti-gay or a hemophobe like half this site is--but is opposed to gay marriages...Which Obama himself has came out and said that while he supports gay rights, and the right for gays to have gay union contracts he believes that marriage itself should be defined as between a man and a woman...

You can't get CHANGE unless you do things differently.....

Are you one of those that thinks JFK is being kept alive on life support in the top floor of Parkland Hospital in Dallas?

Obama is getting it from the left and Warren from the right.

It's clear that there is nothing Obama can do that would be acceptable to some people.

My opinion is that Obama is a man who respects faith and for that reason respects Warren who is reportedly an amazing man. I don't think the choice was only for political purposes and certainly not cynical reasons. Obama won by enough that he could choose to shut the door on those who did not support him. He risks a lot by choosing Warren. I believe that he genuinely wants to put polarization behind us. If this is true, I applaud him loudly. We have too many problems in the U.S. to allow the polarization to divide us. We have to work together to keep America a great country and the land of opportunity and a light unto the nations in terms of being a real melting pot unlike any other country.

Oh yes indeed!!!!!

He got elected telling voters in the US including the gays what they wanted to heard but he turned on those that supported him in this case the gay and picked a guy that those supporters hate. When not if he flips on what he told you to get your support will you just get over it.

Many in this country don't believe America is a great country, believe the Constitution is "a living document, want to do away with any displace of religion, hate capitalism, want to change the USA into a socialist, western European type country, and they hate anyone that doesn't believe as they do. Obama's roots are with those type people...yet you liberals want us to believe what he says NOW and disregard his past. He will be my President, but I will remain doubtful and vigilant.

Come on Alice you were saying the gays are to just get over being stabbed in the back by someone that 70% of them supported so I want to know are you such a blind follower that you will just GET OVER IT when he starts breaking the promises he made to you?

Oh I guess you maybe are and will, as he promised transparency to ALL the voters but then lied about having contacted the corrupt governor about his Senate seat. Before that he lied about his twenty years in Wright's church, and about knowing Ayers. I guess Rezko is just a guy in the neighborhood too. In the American sport of baseball you only get three strikes but i guess you play by different rules.

Pardon me, but I don't believe Obama promised anybody anything when it came to choosing who would deliver the invocation. As long as Obama continues to advocate for equality for gays and lesbians then he is keeping his promise to them.

How is this not "starting" to break the promise with them?

or can he just change his mind once he doesn't need the groups votes? and go with a person who is on the opposite side of an important issue to that special interest group? is that really Change?

If I was a Obama supporter, I'd stay away form any Bus stops...

Why don't you tell the Gay activist, that was on the news last night, that little speech and see what his reaction is. From what I heard the gays that supported him are really upset about his pick as Obama won on the support of the far Left but now that he has won with their support he has move way to close to the middle. Which is a place the far left (Obama's real support base)don't support.

This whole thing is STUPID. This Whatshisface preacher from SaddleBack is not ......IS NOT.............IS NOT............. the only preacher there and he's not taking over the whole show.

I personally don't care much for preachers nor bankers, lawyers and insurance salespeople, so I'm not biased in that aspect. They're all wanting to get in your pocket book.

BUT...........at first you all were scared shiteless and COMPLETELY CONVINCED that he- Obama- was Muslim...well now if that be so...why in the world would ANY Muslim have a evangelical preacher at his inauguration?????
