Obama Extends Healthcare to Illegal Aliens January 19, 2009 CFIF.org

As Taxpayers Struggle, Congress and Obama Extend Healthcare to Illegal Immigrants, and Raise Taxes on Lower-Income Americans

While an increasing number of Americans face layoffs, benefit cuts and difficulty paying their bills, the last thing that President-Elect Obama and Congress should be doing is devising ways to make taxpayers' lives even tougher by forcing them to subsidize healthcare for illegal immigrants.

But believe it or not, that is precisely what they are poised to do.

In so doing, they will also raise taxes on Americans earning well under $250,000, the supposed floor that Obama promised during campaign season for any tax increases.

This week, the House voted to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP, pronounced "s-chip"), the federal health care system that provides health insurance to lower-income children via funding to the states. Created in 1997, it constituted the greatest government healthcare expansion since Medicaid and Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society."

In theory, SCHIP aims to assist children whose families' incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low to afford private insurance. In practice, however, SCHIP covers hundreds of thousands of adults, while excluding many children that it should presumably assist.

And in 2007, the Pelosi-Reid Congress attempted to eviscerate even that income criterion, by expanding SCHIP to cover families whose incomes exceeded the federal poverty level some 300%. Accordingly, it was rightfully seen as a first step on the inexorable road to nationalized health care for all Americans.

And now, Obama and Congress are not only preparing to implement that dramatic funding increase, but also to remove current restrictions prohibiting illegal immigrants from exploiting SCHIP to receive benefits.

I have no problem in this-- any/all kids in America should have access to health care...We're funding the illegals- both childrens and adults- emergency/major medical care now thru our increased health care costs and health care insurance costs-- so we might as well provide at least the kids with insurance for preventive care too, which in the long run lowers the emergency/major medical costs...

The sad part is that we allowed 20+ million illegals to freely enter this country and did little or nothing to stop that for the past 15 years- so the big corporates could have semi slave cheap labor, and the rich and elite could have cheap pool boys, maids, and gardeners.....

Giving them free health care won't go far to stop them from coming in either.

This is only going to make sure that the Dr's will get their money.

If we're going to pay for Mexican's kid's care, why not pay for it in Mexico? The doctors and medicine is cheaper down there.

  They get their money one way or another-- if there is not insurance to pay the bill- they just raise the rate for the next time they see you or me--and then our health insurance company raises the insurance cost to compensate for that....

Guaranteeing everyone access to health care and preventative medicine has been estimated could begin saving the country hundreds of Billions $ a few years down the line by the AMA (not really a liberal organization)...

Pure BS. Have you ever seen a Government affiliated/sponsored program be cost effective?

Didn't think so.

Well Private Industry hasn't been a shining role model-- when we have the highest priced health care in the world- but the quality of it is rated 37th in the world...

Just like with all banking and other industry in the US-- they had their opportunity to operate virtually unregulated and unpoliced-- and they failed miserably and showed they can't do it - and now will have to pay the piper with much stricter controls....

More stricter controls like BSA?

Have you forgotten about the deregulators Obama has in his circle? And hey, what about good 'ol Reich? You bet, those boys are going to get things fixed up good and proper!

Too many Government restrictions and regs in U.S. healthcare.

Caps need to be put on Punitive Damages in lawsuits to bring the insurance rates down for care providers.

I could go on, and on, and on, and on, and on. But that would be futile.

You're stupid.

I agree about the tort reform on Punitive damages and trial award limitations-- but you count up how many of the folks in Congress are attorneys (both parties)- and it ain't going to happen...

OT? Do you think that one reason the costs of health care are so high would be the $316,962 salaries of Illionois state senator's wives?

In January of 2005 Barack Obama became a freshman United States senator. In March of 2005 Mrs. Obama received a promotion at her place of employment, the not-for-profit University of Chicago Hospitals. Prior to the promotion, she was a hospital administrator earning $121,910 annually. Her promotion provided her with a title -- Vice-President for Community and External Affairs -- and a salary of $316,962.

The situation becomes even more grotesque. In justifying the $195,000 increase in Mrs. Obama's salary, University of Chicago Hospitals spokesman John Easton told the Tribune that Mrs. Obama's salary is in line with the salaries of the sixteen other vice presidents at the hospital. Mr. Easton glibly admits that the University of Chicago Hospitals had seventeen overpaid executives. If we take Mrs. Obama as our benchmark, we can assume that each executive is overpaid in the amount of at least $200,000. Some may accuse me of being overly simplistic, but I am absolutely certain that the salaries of the executives of the University of Chicago Hospitals could be immediately reduced by $3.4 million and the hospital system would suffer absolutely no adverse effects.

If it would keep people from using emergency departments as their primary care physican then it will lower health care costs.

Emergency departments are required by law to provide care to anyone who comes thru the doors...regardless of one's ability to pay.

This is one reason those with insurance pay more.
