Obama halts deepwater drilling

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration announced Monday it is requiring environmental reviews for all new deepwater oil drilling.

For now, new deepwater drilling is under a temporary moratorium in the Gulf. Once that's lifted, though, Interior's new policy is likely to make it much more time-consuming for oil companies to move forward with new deepwater projects, since environmental assessments will be required along the way.

Shallow-water drilling will also be subjected to stricter environmental scrutiny under the new policy.

The American Petroleum Institute said Interior's new rules on environmental reviews could create unnecessary delays without added environmental protection.

so in effect... no more oil well drilling.. .

most of you know nothing on why we are not ever going to be free from foreign oil...

this is because you listen to rush and other project mockingbird paid propagandists...so, free of charge here is the reason we will never be free from foreign oil...

Kissinger in the 60's made a deal with the saudis that we would buy their oil if they buy our debt....if we produce all of our own oil and do not buy from them, they drop the dollar and our dollar goes into freefall.

it is that simple...the gulf makes no difference as far as getting off of foreign oil...they should not be drilling wells like the one from bp as it was called a super deep well and this should only be done on land....i know engineers that worked on it....it may never really stop leaking and the methane could have broken the floor of the gulf....it was a serious situation out there...

Well after the BP total f***up- and the evidence came out of years of cutting corners and disregarding all the rules on the books by BP- which were overlooked by the Bush administrations Interior Dept and the U.S. Minerals Management Service which were cited by the Inspector Generals office as totally corrupt- and bought out by the Big Oil folks---
and now with revelations just coming out from their own people that there could be up to 27,000 more possibly leaking abandoned oil wells in the area that the MMS just forgot to inspect-- there are a lot of folks- Conservative and Liberal- especially that live in the Gulf area- that think maybe the policies need to be relooked at.....

What good is having the safety rules if some are going to be allowed to cut corners and not obey them like BP and other GW Oil Buddies did for years- and our government is not going to enforce them?

The truth is that the Obama administration gave BP the OK to drill without an Environmental Impact Study for the well just last year. That would have included a "Worst Case Scenario" in case of an accident.

The well didn't even start until after Buckwheats inauguration. It's HIS baby and no one else's.

Obama is also the largest political recipient of money from BP in history.

How's that "HOPEY CHANGY" thing going?

Besides, the oil doesn't seem to be a big problem as of yet cause the fishing has opened. What is killing Louisiana is the oil industry layoffs due to the moratorium.

if you want to go backwords looking for blame.. you must first understand that large projects take years of planning and permit approval.. such as the fact that the response plans have not been updated or improved significantly since 89..

Yep- and years of corruption and lack of oversight because of their chuminess with Big Oil by MMS will not be cleaned up overnight...

Why not? I thought this man could practically walk on water? I recall reading some old threads here where someone said constantly that the country needed CHANGE.

Now, same poster seems content to see things cleaned up over a period of years. Like Buckeye says on another forum, Very Gradual Change You Can Believe In.

From the little I've read about the MMS since the BP drilling disaster, it was business as usual at that agency under Obama......ie NO CHANGE.

So much for marking 20 Jan 2009 as the day it would be noted that sea levels were no longer on the rise.
