Educators, critics weigh reform

President Obama's blunt but little-noted statement last week that bad teachers need to be fired and that some fellow Democrats resist real change in public schools has jolted educators and education critics alike.

"It was unusual for a Democratic president to say that," said Cynthia G. Brown, director of education policy for the liberal Center for American Progress. "I applauded when I watched him say it on television."

On the right, the surprise in some quarters was just as great.

"For any nationally recognized Democratic official, let alone a Democratic president, to bluntly talk about the need to remove teachers for poor performance is unprecedented," said Frederick M. Hess, American Enterprise Institute director of education policy studies.

I heard this little talk - and he again stressed the importance of the parents in getting involved with their childrens education....

Vouchers would give each parent the ability to seek out the best teachers.

Let supply and demand go to work here.

Can't imagine what would be said of a Republican had he insinuated what Zer0 did of teachers.

2) I met with Obama's education advisor before the election locally. Everyone else was school board members or teachers. What he said agreed with this. Obama's focus is sharply on developing better teachers and in making sure we have good teachers through whatever means is necessary. Other areas of focus were year round schooling for children who need it, better teacher training, mentoring of junior teachers before they are allowed to teach independently.

He said the same things in Chicago. Read up on how that turned out!

Nor do any successful politicians, certainly not Bush, Clinton, Bush the father, or Reagan. Tell me that any of them have taken on powerful unions, ignoring the political fallout altogether :)

Which one told the unionized air traffic controllers to get their butts back on the job???

I agree with Obama on this. Why would any school system want to retain bad teachers. I think they need to do away with the teacher safety net and make teachers retain their jobs due to being good teachers not how long they have taught for a district.

I agree with you and Obama on this! I hope Obama would do something about getting rid of bad teachers. But in reality I can not see him ever doing anything more than talking about it. To be able to fire a teacher you would have to take on the Union and I do not see to many politicians especially a Democratic one willing to do this.

So even though I support what he said and hope he does it, I think he was just tickling some ears. But I hope I am wrong!
