Obama, Curious George T-shirt offends citizens, stirs up legal action

Tribune wire reports

May 14, 2008

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The publisher of the popular children book's series "Curious George" is considering legal action against a Georgia bar owner for selling T-shirts that link Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to the inquisitive monkey.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is upset with Mike Norman, owner of a Marietta, Ga., bar, for selling the shirts which show Curious George peeling a banana with "Obama in '08" printed beneath the image.

"Houghton Mifflin Harcourt did not nor would we ever authorize or approve this use of the Curious George character, which we find offensive and utterly out of keeping with the values Curious George represents," said Richard Blake, the company's spokesman. "We are monitoring the situation and weighing all of our options."

Norman, who began selling the shirts in late April, has said they are not meant to be racist. He said he thinks the Illinois senator and the character "look so much alike."

Bill Nigut, southeast regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said Norman is being disingenuous.

"He can pretend he doesn't understand what the message of that T-shirt is, but he knows full well that's an offensive and demeaning stereotype used to insult African-Americans," Nigut said. He called on citizens not to buy the T-shirts, but stopped short of calling for a boycott of Norman's business or denying him to speak out.

"His speech is protected, but that doesn't mean that it's appropriate and that doesn't mean it's not hateful," Nigut said.

On Tuesday, about a dozen people gathered outside the bar to object to the T-shirt. The protesters said the shirts are racist and they wanted Norman, to stop selling them.

Nigut said he was not surprised to hear that some in the community might have bought the shirt.

"To say that there are a few people in the community who are eager to have that ... I wouldn't deny that," Nigut said, adding that some could've purchased a shirt as a souvenir of the controversy. "But does it reflect what the vast majority of Cobb County residents believe in? I don't think that for a second."

why is it that if you make a snide remark refering to a persons skin color or heritage, you are a racist. Also if you say none of that matters, I am hiring the BEST person for the job, then you are a racist because you are not giving the women or the ethnic people a fair shake.

these a-holes running around screaming foul, demanding equal treatment need to pick a side of the fence and stay on it.
just like Hillary being the tough woman until she needs the sympathy vote and she crys a little to play the wounded girl role.....

That picture isn't quite right because Obama hardly smiles. But then, If I was married to that ungrateful sour bag that he is, I'd probably be frowning all the time, too.

Its them Democrats (Liberals) they are such Racist, they do not believe a Black man is good enough or smart enough to get a Job on his own merit so they pass laws to help them get a job.

Same reason Sharpton and Jackson do not want Obama to be President, because that would then prove that a Black man is equal and Americans treat them equally and they can achieve anything they put there minds to doing without a welfare hand to get them there.

Democrats the Party of Racism!

I disagree Kola. I found it funny. and I think if they had a cracker picture for McCain, a bunch of the hommies would laugh at it.

blacks in power use race to keep the poor blacks down trodden and use it to turn up the hatred for whites.....

black on black crime is more troublesome for the black community than white profiling cops. ebonics has taken them a whole level lower , rather than help them out.

Jessie and Al NEED them to be poor and needy, that is where they get thier power from.

and one more point, while I have on my bed sheet and pointy hat, and black that referes to himself as an African American can get on a boat an row his happy ass back to Africa. I do not run all over calling myself an Irish/German American. I am just an American. this hyphonated origins stuff needs to be tossed out!

they were slaves that were BOUGHT from the BLACK KINGS. so they would have been living the same life in Africa. it is too bad that there ever was slavery, but I see no reason for that to be a reason to assist them 200 years later...

Slavery was a crime! But all crimes have a statute of limitations on them, surely a few hundred years should be enough for slavery. No reason to talk about it anymore! Crime was done and the criminals and victims are all dead now. The only people left are those reaping the benefits of the crime did against their ancestors. You see now instead of living in a bamboo hut, hunting monkeys in the trees to eat they get to reap the benefit of their ancestors coming to America.

As for Curios George, I believe that Black lady has the right to buy or sell depending on what she did in this picture of any Black person she wants portrayed in that way. Heck if it is OK for them to call each other the N word, surely it is ok for them to wear monkey shirts of each other if they chose?
