Obama Suggests Gitmo Closure in Second Term
by John Sexton 20 Oct 2012, 11:55 AM PDT
One of Obama's explicit election promises in 2008 was that he would close America's prison at Guantanamo Bay. In his appearance on Jon Stewart's show Thursday night, now-President Obama announced this was a goal for his second term.
Commenting on the idea Friday as part of a panel on the Alex Wagner show, Melissa Harris-Perry agreed this was beneficial to selling the idea of a second Obama term. Not explained by Harris-Perry: Why should we expect Obama's second attempt to close Gitmo to be any more effective than his first attempt?

Contrary to the partisan claims made on Wagner's show, the failure to close Gitmo was not simply the result of Republican intransigence. In fact, it's ironic that not closing Gitmo turns out to be one of the few popular, bipartisan acts Congress embraced during Obama's first term.

In January 2009, days after being sworn in, Obama signed an executive order vowing to close Gitmo within one year. But within days of signing the order, Britain refused to take any of the prisoners Obama was hoping to unload. Germany refused a similar request in June. Meanwhile, about 65 percent of the public disagreed with closing the prison.

In June of 2009, Congress weighed in when it sent funding bills to Obama which pointedly did not include money for closing Guantanamo Bay. By October of that year, Congress added language to a Homeland security bill which prohibited the transfer of detainees to American soil. A total of 88 House Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the provision. Despite this, two months later Obama announced plans to move detainees to a prison in Illinois.

By June of 2010 Obama had given up on closing Gitmo entirely. The NY Times noted that "the Obama administration has sidelined efforts to close the Guantánamo prison, making it unlikely that President Obama will fulfill his promise to close it before his term ends in 2013."

Adding Gitmo to the President's very short list of clear promises for a second term doesn't sound promising, but this may be exactly what Obama plans to do. On October 2nd, the government announced it would buy a prison in Illinois to which it could transfer Gitmo prisoners. Is this a legitimate attempt to keep a 2008 campaign promise or just a last-minute effort to muddy the waters on Obama's failure to get this done? The fact that this is coming up just weeks before the election suggests the latter.

It's the act of a desperate campaign that is slowly rolling around the bowl and headed for the hole.

President Obama recent announcement to land an astronaut in Arizona has surprised the left at his bold new move to re-ignite the space race.
President Obama said while a actual moon shot is out of the question, this can be done and we must do it to show the world we could if we wanted to.

the gutsy move is not without a cost, it is expected to cost billions with Hollywood and the government collaborating to make this cost more then the actual space race. Insiders say they will stick with the black and white version to make it more authentic and to give the perception of space.

Obama will play himself but all low level NASA government workers will be replaced by paid actors to create more jobs and to make the actors feel better.

When asked if the switch in NASA policy from making muslims feel better about themselves was an indication of failure of that mission, Obama stated he was offended and felt it was offensive to tie any failure to muslims or himself. Obama stated that the Muslim be happy mission was a success and they have now are training their children how to use rockets.

President Obama hopes to open up new territories for them to launch their rockets at soon, and will announce the new Gitmo day camp. A training center for self esteem and inner development. a plan critics say is a way to water down his failure to close gitmo in his first three terms.
hey if you believe his old lies... then his new lies are just as easy to swallow :?

The new White House leak according to the New York Times is that after the election Obama has a secret meeting planned with Iran to negotiate a stop of their nuclear build up if Obama will ease up on sanctions.

Is this Iran's way of having a say in the US elections. or Obama way of assuring re-election

Will Obama come out and say you have to re-elect me as Iran will not negotiate with anyone else and there will be a war in the near future if Romney is elected. SCARY TACTIC 101. Use a threat of a pending war to scare voters into not changing the government. :x

Oh but don't worry the White House came out right after this leak hit the wires and said it wasn't true and there is no meeting planned   Gee they would not want to let the secret out of the bag until at least Monday night during the debate on Foreign affairs now would they. Is this Obama October Surprise everyone is talking about? :?

People don't really give a chit whether Gitmo closes or not. They were just saying they wanted it closed to get back at Bush.

Obama used Gitmo as another broken campaign promise cause he knew they really didn't care.
