Yeah - usually someone is awarded this once prestigious honour for a life time of achievement - but in this case a few months is all it took.

Despite tha fact it makes me look bad when I say it - I believe this simply cheapens the value of this award.

The 1.4 million dollar cheque should come in handy during his retirement years.

BC I was posting the article at the same time you were

I deleted mine. There is already a petion being circulated to call it the nobel appeasement prize.
This nomination took place two weeks after he took office. Kind of makes you wonder if they were not trying to console him for his loseing out on the olympics?

As to the check. Rush is going to suggest today Obama send it to his brother living on 20 dollars a year in his hut in kenya!

He's in good company....remember the infamous Jimmy Carter won it as well.....both of them bring peace to a girl scout troop.

BRG, apparently you are not alone in thinking this -

"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," said former Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate.

"This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act," Walesa said.

(Toronto Star)

Walesa is a man who earned it and can speak to the matter of deserving an award, not that he would ever claim to be deserving.

Kind of reminds me of Neville Chamberlain. He went about the world talking of peace and shaking hands and mollycoddling folks like Hitler. How did it work out for him? What a bunch of compost.

(Sung to the tune of "If I Only Had a Brain")

Oh, my fame has now gone global-
I've finally won the Nobel
for all the things I do.
and, now, in an all-time first:
Michelle's been crowned Miss Universe!
If you only had a clue.

People swoon when I have spoken.
I'm much more than a token,
I'm clean and articulate, too.
I'll look tall and trim and dapper
as I lead you down the crapper
If you only had a clue.

Oh, the media had folks thinkin'
I'd be another Lincoln-
What awesome things I'd do!
But these days the press is squirmin'
'cause I'm more like Pee Wee Herman.
If you only had a clue.

Capitalism's what I'm hatin'
and I'm sick and tired of waitin'
for it's heyday to be through.
So I'll take my team of wankers
and I'll sic 'em on the bankers
If you only had a clue.

Reverend Wright's the guy I follow,
my denials all were hollow-
Not a single one was true.
I act serious and wonk-y
as I stick it to the honkies
If you only had a clue.

I think Islam's fine and dandy-
My election came in handy
for Iran—and Syria, too.
Now their muscles they'll be flexin'
'cause you voted by complexion
If you only had a clue.

Oh, Michelle's a chic trendsetter-
She clearly is your better.
A Princeton graduate, too.
But you crackers best not test her-
'cause she morphs into Aunt Esther!
If you only had a clue

I put a garden in my backyard,
And made fun of some retards,
and picked my Final Four, too.
Dee-doo-de-doo-de-doo-doo
I'm on 60 Minutes laughin'
as the economy is crashin'
If you only had a clue.

Now I'm fixin' and I'm changin',
And busy re-arrangin'.
I have no need for you.
If you whine that I'm appalling
I'll have ACORN come a 'calling
If you only had a clue.

I've no intent of stoppin'
I'm gonna keep you hoppin'-
My reign you're going to rue
You'll be wishin' I was Carter!
You'll be wishin' you'd been smarter!
If you only had a clue.

A top Democratic National Committee official reacted furiously to a statement from Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele mocking -- and describing as "unfortunate" -- President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize.

"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists - the Taliban and Hamas this morning - in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO. "Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize - an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride - unless of course you are the Republican Party.

How in he!! can he even come close to someone like Mother Teresa, for example. This is so wrong ..... makes me angry

Barack Obama, the perfect recipient
Awarding BHO the prize is at once shocking and depraved. Ayn Rand predicted it all.
Robert Tracinski's commentary best sums it up.

The Nobel Prize for Moral Posturing
Obama's Nobel Peace Prize Is a Joke

by Robert Tracinski

The news announcement came over my cell phone this morning—I thought it was a joke at first, a headline from The Onion instead of the New York Times—that the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize is Barack Obama.

For what? What has Obama ever accomplished for the cause of world peace?

The Nobel Committee says the prize is "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." Which Obama has accomplished by—what exactly? Giving a speech at the UN?

Are they giving Obama the prize because he is withdrawing US troops from Iraq? But that drawdown began under the previous administration and is possible only because of choices made by George Bush. Obama has merely continued the natural course of the Bush policies.

Is it because he has closed down the terrorist prison camp at Guantanamo? Well, he has promised to do so—but his own deadline has passed, and he hasn't done it yet.

Did Obama get Iran to relinquish its nuclear weapons? No, he has merely started a new round of negotiations whose main effect seems to be to give US support to Russian aid for Iran's uranium enrichment.

Has he championed the cause of "democracy"? Obama has sided with a would-be dictator against the constitution of Honduras, and he just cut off funding for an organization that helps document Iranian human rights abuses.

Has he achieved peace in Afghanistan? On the most pressing foreign policy issue of his administration—the most immediate issue of war and peace he has so far been called to decide upon—Obama hasn't even made a decision yet. But he's getting the Nobel Peace Prize.

So I guess it is a joke, after all—a joke by the Nobel committee at its own expense.

The fact that Obama hasn't actually accomplished anything isn't all that unprecedented. When the Nobel committee gave the prize to lifelong terrorist Yasser Arafat, they did not do so because the Oslo Accords were a great success. They did so because the accords were in trouble. Several members of the committee admitted later that their motive in giving the award was to encourage Arafat to stick with the "peace process." It didn't work, of course, and a few years later, Arafat would launch the Second Intifada, importing Iranian explosives to strap to suicide bombers and plunging the Palestinian territories into another round of chaos and bloodshed from which it has yet to emerge.

The new Nobel is also meant for the same purpose: not to reward something Obama has done, but to influence his future action. Lech Walensa—Nobel recipient in 1983 for facing down the Soviets—put it quite clearly: "So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act. This is probably an encouragement for him to act."

This is an attempt by the Nobel committee to play on Obama's vanity in order to influence his decisions on Iran and Afghanistan. The message is: how could you possibly let Israel attack Iran's nuclear facilities, or how could you send an additional 40,000 troops to "escalate" the war in Afghanistan—after we've just given you the Nobel Peace Prize?

In appealing to Obama's moral vanity, they know their man well—and it will probably work.

In this respect, Obama is the perfect successor to the last American president to win the Nobel: Jimmy Carter. Consider the legacy of Carter's term in office.

Carter withdrew American support for the shah in Iran, then failed to mount any effectual response to the seizure of the US embassy and its staff—all of which allowed the Ayatollah Khomeini to establish a brutal Islamist regime which has been the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, a supporter of Palestinian terrorism, civil war in Lebanon, and insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a regime that has repeatedly murdered and tortured its own citizens.

By allowing a Communist takeover in Nicaragua, Carter encouraged a legacy of socialist strongmen that is still riling Latin America to this day.

Carter's weakness in Latin America and Iran also emboldened the Soviets to invade Afghanistan, inaugurating three decades of bloody civil war and providing the proving ground for the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

So Carter's legacy is three decades of chaos and killing—and the growth of three of today's biggest threats to world peace. Yet Carter is infamous for his haughty, priggish sense of moral superiority.

This is what the Nobel Peace Prize really stands for: irresponsible moral posturing in the service of the leftist delusion that appeasement will bring peace, when all it really brings is more war.

Come to think of it, that makes Barack Obama the perfect recipient.

From Yahoo today:

Obama's Nobel: The Last Thing He Needs
The last thing Barack Obama needed at this moment in his presidency and our politics is a prize for a promise.

Inspirational words have brought him a long way - including to the night in Grant Park less than a year ago when he asked that we "join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand." (See pictures of Obama in Grant Park.)

By now there are surely more callouses on his lips than his hands. He, like every new president, has reckoned with both the power and the danger of words, dangers that are especially great for one who wields them as skillfully as he. A promise beautifully made raises hopes especially high: we will revive the economy while we rein in our spending; we will make health care simpler, safer, cheaper, fairer. We will rid the earth of its most lethal weapons. We will turn green and clean. We will all just get along. (See pictures of eight months of Obama's diplomacy.)

So when reality bites, it chomps down hard. The Nobel committee cited "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." His critics fault some of those efforts: those who favor a missile shield for Poland or a troop surge in Afghanistan or a harder line on Iran. But even his fans know that none of the dreams have yet come true, and a prize for even dreaming them can feed the illusion that they have. (See the Top 10 Obama Backlash Moments)

Maybe the prize will give him more power, new muscles to haul unruly nations in line. But peacemaking is more about ingenuity than inspiration, about reading other nations' selfish interests and cynically, strategically exploiting them for the common good. Will it help if fewer countries come to the table hating us? To a point. But it's a starting point, not an end in itself.

At this moment many Americans are longing for a president who is more bully, less pulpit. The president who leased his immense inaugural good will to the hungry appropriators writing the stimulus bill, who has not stopped negotiating health care reform except to say what is non-negotiable, whose solicitude for the wheelers and dealers who drove the financial system into a ditch leaves the rest of us wondering who has our back, has always shown great promise, said the right things, affirmed every time he opens his mouth that he understands the fears we face and the hopes we hold. But he presides over a capital whose day-to-day functioning has become part-travesty, part-tragedy, wasteful, blind, vain, petty, where even the best intentioned reformers measure their progress with teaspoons. There comes a time when a President needs to take a real risk - and putting his prestige on the line to win the Olympics for his home town does not remotely count.

Compare this to Greg Mortenson, nominated for the prize by some members of Congress, who the bookies gave 20-to-1 odds of winning. Son of a missionary, a former army Medic and mountaineer, he has made it his mission to build schools for girls in places where opium dealers and tribal warlords kill people for trying. His Central Asia Institute has built more than 130 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan - a mission which has, along the way, inspired millions of people to view the protection and education of girls as a key to peace and prosperity and progress.(See an interactive guide to Obama's first 100 days.)

Sometimes the words come first. Sometimes, it's better to let actions speak for themselves.
