Obama's Empty Promise

Obama's promise of ethics reform faces early test
IHT ^ | Feb. 3, 2009 | Peter Baker

During almost two years on the campaign trail, Barack Obama vowed to slay the demons of Washington, bar lobbyists from his administration and usher in what he would later call in his Inaugural Address a "new era of responsibility." What he did not talk much about were the asterisks.

The exceptions that went unmentioned now include a pair of cabinet nominees who did not pay all of their taxes. Then there is the lobbyist for a military contractor who is now slated to become the No. 2 official in the Pentagon. And there are the others brought into government from the influence industry even if not formally registered as lobbyists.

President Barack Obama said Monday that he was "absolutely" standing behind former Senator Tom Daschle, his nominee for health and human services secretary, and Daschle, who met late in the day with leading senators in an effort to keep his confirmation on track, said he had "no excuse" and wanted to "deeply apologize" for his failure to pay $128,000 in U.S. taxes.

But the episode has already shown how, when faced with the perennial clash between campaign rhetoric and Washington reality, Obama has proved willing to compromise.

Every four or eight years a new president arrives in town, declares his determination to cleanse a dirty process and invariably winds up trying to reconcile the clear ideals of electioneering with the muddy business of governing. Obama on his first day in office imposed perhaps the toughest ethics rules of any president in modern times, and since then he and his advisers have been trying to explain why they do not cover this case or that case.

"This is a big problem for Obama, especially because it was such a major, major promise,"

It was either inexperience or he thought he could get away with whatever he chose to do!

I mentioned on Ranchers quite awhile ago, that he set the bar too high, and that he was going to disappoint with his promises, there are more disappointments to come.

When mentioned I think I was called a rightwing nut, or it had to do with dishonest blogs or something, can't remember, I didn't pay much attention!

You need to remember that the resident liberals on ranchers.net always come up with pet nicknames for those that oppose their views.
oldtimer scours the Internet looking for cute little nicknames and then the rest jump on the bandwagon using them, most have not even a clue what they mean but it must be cute because oldtimer uses them, having spent HOUR AND HOURS sifting thru statements for something to refer to and over use :D :D :D
Yep he is a true and true rancher, feeding his cattle by double clicking on an icon
and checking his cows by proxy!!!!!

Looks like Obama is trying taking responsibility for Daschle's appointment NOW . What a joke when he told Chris Wallace on Fox "We can't let it look as if there is two sets of rules one for the high up and one for the rest." TO LATE He didn't pull Daschles appointment, Daschle pulled it and Geithner the tax cheat got sworn in with full support of Obama. But hey we can let it look like there is two sets of rules BULL.

How do you know Obama didn't tell Daschle to withdraw? Nothing is as it seems in Washington. Maybe he traded Daschle for Holder, knowing that getting Daschle with the issues of Daschle being paid by big healthcare companies as a consultant was going to blow up in his face.

Either way, he was caught in a corner, wasn't he?

It just goes to show Obama's character! If he made the decision, he shouldn't have come out and let Daschle make the decision!

He should have stood up like a man, and admitted that he had made a mistake to nominate the man, when he knew it contradicted his ethics reform.

Why did he wait a couple of days, when he found out. Only one answer... he didn't think it would matter that much to the people or the media.

But go on and make excuses for the wishy washy, flip flopping "Mr. President"

Obama set the ethics bar high, so high in fact that many democrats can not get past it,.. maybe that explains why Obama is now filling a key positions with a Republican..

Read Chris Matthews' Hardball about how politics work. I can't behave this way but this is how deals are done.

Oh I don't know maybe it was Gibbs telling the WH press corp that Obama had nothing to do with it and when reasked him saying "How can I make it any clearer it was Daschle" If that didn't convince me maybe it was Obama telling Chris Wallace of Fox that he had nothing to do with Daschle's pulling out. That Daschle contacted him and told him he was withdrawing. But hey if you want to call Obama and Gibbs Liars you go right ahead Reader it may be the only thing we can agree on.

What about change and transpancy?

Obama is way over his head already. He's looking like a young punk that still is wet behind the ears with no experience - oh wait, he doesn't have any experience....

Could somebody remind me why people voted for him? I don't see it.
