Obama's speech disappoints, fuels frustration at Copenhagen

US president offers no further commitment on reducing emissions or on finance to poor countries

But his speech offered no indication America was ready to embrace bold measures, after world leaders had been working desperately against the clock to try to paper over an agreement to prevent two years of wasted effort — and a 10-day meeting — from ending in total collapse.

Obama, who had been skittish about coming to Copenhagen at all unless it could be cast as a foreign policy success, looked visibly frustrated as he appeared before world leaders.

He offered no further commitments on reducing emissions or on finance to poor countries beyond Hillary Clinton's announcement yesterday that America would support a $100bn global fund to help developing nations adapt to climate change.

President Obama had to leave Copenhagen a bit early because of the snowstorm. It's even worse up there, they are going to get like a a foot and a half of snow. You can go years without seeing that much snow in Washington. I'm sure that many here are chuckling- oh the irony, a snowstorm causes the President to rush back to D.C.

This storm will almost certainly break local December snow records, and could very well rank with some of the biggest area snowstorms of all time.

As snow makes its approach from the south, confidence is growing that this powerful storm will eventually find itself ranked among the greats. In fact, December (and perhaps other) snowstorm records, may be about to fall throughout the area. Louis Uccellini, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Prediction and a 'godfather' of snowstorm analysis, spoke to CWG this morning and said, "chances are steadily increasing for this to be a historic snowstorm."

well Obama is all about historic change... now he had to leave a historic global warming conference early because of a historic late fall snow storm..

seems like GOD does indeed have a sense of humor!

oh by the way...

a state of emergency has been declared, with officials urging people to "prepare to be on their own for up to 72 hours."

Is it too late to ramp up CO2 production? Maybe take a little of the chill off?

Might be time to fudge some more data, so it will at least feel warmer.

I hope Obama can help DC with the snow removal..

The Washington Times reported that President Obama's helicopter was grounded by the massive snowstorm, requiring him to travel to the White House by motorcade after landing at Andrews Airforce Base on his return from the climate conference in Copenhagen.

maybe we should turn to the real climate experts...
A major snow storm this early in the season is unusual in Washington DC, but was anticipated by the Old Farmer's Almanac

well it is snowing now.. we had rain last night and most of today,... alot of rain... but now that the snow started,... I guess we are on our own for the next 72 hours like the poor folk are in DC..

our lords' sense of humor is showing this weekend... :)

as for survival.. I think we can pull through.. we have plenty of beef, fresh salmon..and Annie picked up a few roasters last week.. a gas stove, and if all that fails I have a vent free gas heater in the garage, and a few full bottles of propane.. and the rest of the propane tank that heated the shop all last winter.. so I think we'll get by..

and if it gets really bad after it snows and then floods I can get a few pictures of the mini street icebergs to post..
