Went for a short tour this evening and "shot" some cows and calves on the meadow we left for fall pasture.

A couple of late May born pairs

The cows look great and the country is spectacular! Those ol' sisters have lots of grass and i'll bet they eat fast so the snow doesn't cover it up before they finish supper. Someday i'm coming to see ya! Save me a bear! and a moose and a cariboo and a dozen wolves.

There's not many on this ranch but there are lots in this country.

Cows and calves look great gcreek. Good red cows on good grass are an unbeatable combination. Looks like your gonna have some great weaning weights.

Your cattle are in wonderful condition and look to be weighing heavy. Thanks for the pictures of the livestock and the pretty country where you call home.

Thanks everyone, we will be weaning the bunch at our new place this weekend. (weather permitting). These pairs will be weaned when we preg on Nov 4.

If conditions allow us to rustle till Christmas hopefully the cows will clean this up. Leftover grass here has no food value come spring.

It may not have any feed value, but it does catch snow and help start the new grass come spring. At least in our area, that is how it works.

The trees catch and hold the snow here. :D

Most all of the grass here grows on peat meadows. They flood in the spring and the water gets the grass started. Cows will avoid areas where old bottom is left. In the past, everyone burnt off this old bottom in the spring. The Forest Service has made it so onerus for the odd fire that burns a few bug-kill trees that it rarely happens any more.

I have never been able to figure out why the gov't is so sure that trees are worth saving but cattle are not. They will defend those worthless trees to the taxpayers last dollar, and bitch and moan everytime a guy wants to do something to increase the carrying capacity of his crown range..... because it will be at the expense of some bug killed junk, worthless Bam, or nearly worthless Aspen. Wouldn't it be better in the long run to run worthless cows?
