Off to check on my "city" cattle. First snow is coming down as I write which will surely cause one of our city friends to leave the road giving these hfs a chance to try out the golf course or take a stroll in town. We seldom have a year when someone doesn't wipe out some fence.

Then we headed to our west ranch to check on our main herd.

A bull prospect.

Second time in a row that they weren't exactly where they should be. Oh well as long as they still are on our place.

Lick tubs causing some to gather for a picture.

Out standing in the wrong field.

Fence wrecker. Could be the cause of wayward cattle. Or it could be the big herd of Elk that don't seem to respect our fences.

Thanks for the pictures Per. The sky in the background of the elk photos, screams winter. Something I'm not looking forward to! They are predicting another bad winter for the mid-Atlantic, but I'm hoping they are wrong like they were last year. It's not so much the cold or the snow, it's the people I have to share the roads with.

wonderful pic's Per, with all that grass i think the elk are trying to break in not out  either way you'll need a good fencing crew come spring  maybe even sooner. RA builds one heck of a cross fence, maybe you could import him

Great set of pictures! Wandering cattle are a real problem this time of year it seems. The calves always seem to be able to find that weak spot in the fence.

Sometimes it's my own fault - this past week I had to keep putting calves back in until I discovered that I had unplugged the fencer (a few days earlier) to make some changes and forgot to plug it back in when I was finished . . .

Hey, I recognize the spot where that bull calf is standing by the trees!!

(don't I???) :p

Isn't that where we found some cows on the wrong side of the fence??
And your dad gave Mr. FH that wild ride?????????

That was a fun day!!

Whould Elk respect a mulit strand hot wire?

I know the coyotes have gotton to going around my place except they have found a couple of places they can cross and that makes them easy to drop.

Faster I think Dad was just trying to "smooth" out the terrain for his guest. Yes it was near that area. Too bad it was so snowy and foggy that day.

George I suppose a guy could control the wildlife with a multiple strand electric fence but it would take many miles of fence in rough terrain and bush, being a barrier to the natural flow of the ecological goods and services that we are stewards of. And then on top of that the moose don't respect anything electric or not and the wolves can push any and all creatures through the most permeable of barriers. I"ll stick to lamenting once in a while and living with the odd change in the grazing plan. :)

Faster I had to Chuckle when you mentioned Per's Dads driving, those wayward cows won't get away even if it means the trucks tires having to leave the ground. PER is that a black or Griz. heading your way. How did the corral we put together work.

I believe you!! It didn't bother Mr. FH at all, he was enjoying every minute.
Me, I was glad I was with per who seemed to be fairly sensible... :D
All in all, it was great. Good cattle, beautiful country, wonderful people.

Eastwind that was a really big black bear and the corral you helped to build worked better than we imagined. It was a little tight but the calves sorted nice and the chute section flowed excellent. Thanks for the help.

Sensible, hmm, I like that FH, must be true. The second half of the day involved a trip to Brooks to speak to a producer group and some media. Never got the photo's taken. I did have a nice visit with the politician that gave me a ride to the event. Nothing sensible in that conversation though. :!:
