What is/are your criterion/criteria for selecting replacements? Your cattle look real nice in that sunshine...that is something we have not had for for over a month. Just keeps raining, drizzling and stays damp all the time. Calves really produce snot in this weather. So far we have just had to pull a few for treatment, but it is touch and go. Thanks for the photos and please share your sunshine 8) 8)

We pick mainly for eye appeal of the heifer and what their mother looks like. We also try to keep back the older bigger heifers, which can be determined by their chronological number which is the top number on the ear tag. It's pretty much done by the guess and by gosh swag principal, but it gives our horses something to do.

That is what I suspected since you don't seem to go head over heals over "numbers" when you select bulls. But I'm sure by the looks of what you have posted here, even the "castoffs" are nothing to sneeze at. And I appreciate that once in a while you show a picture of a cow that may not pass the beauty contest, but is still functional and productive. As always, I always enjoy your posts....believe it or not, posting your daily activities provides good therapy! :D :D

Soap, you're never gonna have them all black if you keep retaining those baldies. :D

Looks like your weather is holding, thanks for including me in your week.

We use sorta the same criteria to pick ours: what the cow looks like and the calfs eye appeal. Some awful good heifer calves get sent down the road because we don't like the cow that well.

What's "Topped" mean?

No one has picked any replacements off the top. The best of the best are still in the bunch. There are 16 head weighing between 575# and 600#. Could I interest you in buying them?

Thanks for the explanation AND the offer!!!

I'll have to decline, we just purchased a truck so we're a little light on cash at the moment.

Besides, it would be a long way to trail them and the wife doesn't like me to be out past my bedtime. :D
