Law prof Eugene Volokh blogs about a U.S. House of Representatives bill proposed by Rep. Linda T. Sanchez and 14 others that could make it a federal felony to use your blog, social media like MySpace and Facebook, or any other web media “To Cause Substantial Emotional Distress Through “Severe, Repeated, and Hostile” Speech.” Oh lordy, there goes 4chan.

Here’s the relevant text:
Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both….

in light of the "severe" harassment of that some teens (and some really stupid adults) inflicted upon others in using these sites to bully and spread rumors that caused suicides over the past few years, a message needed to be sent that it was not only wrong, but that the behavior crossed over the line and was criminal..

with that said.. yes, the law continues US toward a nanny state... and shouldn't be needed. but bullys exist.. and when extreme rude behavior is combined with ignorance and anonymity , harassment can go way overboard.

There is action in the government by PC liberals to put the federal government in charge of what can be said on the internet and talk radio(clearly violations of the 1st amendment) to shut down any dissenting voices(conservatives)! This will move the country toward a one-party tyranny similar to the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran. When Bush was President, Democrats said it was patriotic to criticize the government. Now, those that criticize Obama are called hatemongers, extremist(rightwingnuts-OT) and DHS considers them threats to this government. The main stream media's coverage of the TEA parties fell right in line with government policy and illustrates how they are in bed with this administration. We are in danger of our first amendment rights being severely limited and the Constitution being circumvented. If you blindly believe this can't happen, there are already laws on the books limiting free political speech in McCain-Feingold...certain Americans can't criticize incumbents 60 days before an election.
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!
