CIWF reception at the Annual General Session of the OIE
In May, the 72nd Annual General Session of the OIE (the World Organisation for Animal Health) was held in Paris, bringing together Chief Veterinary Officers and other representatives of the governments of the 167 OIE Member Countries.

With approximately 500 participants representing the Member Countries at the General Session, CIWF decided to take the golden opportunity to build on the success of the reception we held in February to lobby delegates.

On the second day of the proceedings, CIWF hosted another successful reception with over 200 delegates, including Chief Veterinary Officers from the OIE member states, attending the event. They were shown our new film ‘Long Distance Transport – A Global Problem’, which depicts the graphic reality of the international trade in live animal transport. This truly international film contains footage from all five continents, and provoked an emotive response from the audience at our reception, with many delegates visibly moved, some even reduced to tears. (Sincere thanks to Animals’ Angles and the Humane Society International for allowing us to include some of their video material.)

Introducing the video, CIWF’s Chief Executive Officer Joyce D’Silva urged delegates to support the OIE initiative on animal welfare and to work towards achieving the highest possible international standards.

CIWF staff mingled with delegates after the showing, to reinforce the work we do to end the suffering of farm animals in long distance transport and to encourage delegates to support the OIE’s work on animal welfare. All attendees were given an information pack, which included a CD of the film, a transport map brochure and an informative international briefing paper.

CIWF would like to congratulate the OIE for taking the constructive step on putting animal welfare on their agenda and we will be continuing our efforts in lobbying this important organisation, so watch this space!
Our event was supported by ICFAW, the International Coalition for Farm Animal Welfare.
