kk i fixed the rhythm a lil bit anyway

Sometimes I get made fun of by the little city kids
Cuz I’m not one of those rich, preppy city girls
I don’t often get money and things from my mom and dad
They can’t afford jewels or diamonds or pretty pearls.

I can’t hang out with friends at the youth center on Fridays
Or go out shopping with them on Saturdays at the mall
I can’t go see all the cool concerts or be just like them
The list of things I can do like that is really quite small.

But I also get lots of things that those city kid’s don’t
I see things every day that they have never even seen
I can go sleep under the stars in the cool, peaceful night
Can get all dirty without worrying about being clean.

Every day I can go out and ride my bay or black horse
And view all the beautiful, green scenery of our place
We have lots of mountains full of trees to climb up and down
And also big flat meadows where we can all go and race.

Although I have to work outside on the ranch every day
And I can’t sleep in late like the other kids get to do
I can have lots of fun out in the middle of no-where
Although my adventures are understood by very few.

It kinda sucks not being able to hang out sometimes
But I wouldn’t change the way I live, not for anything
I love being able to have and play with animals
And listening when all of the pretty, wild birdies sing.

Oh, if only they knew what my life is like way out here
And the great beauty of living in the rough, wild country
They wouldn’t tease about being a tomboy and cowgirl
Instead they would all want to be somehow just more like me.

Great Job!!!!
I didnt know 4H had poetry contests.....and here I am a leader. There's so much you can do in 4H. I'll hafta look into it and see if our county and district have this. Could be something some of the kiddo's are interested in doing, and I was in the dark and didnt know.

Thank you for posting it.

MCG----Encore!! Encore!! I simply LOVED it! Sure hope you are keeping these in writing somewhere safe so that you may share them with kids and grandkids in the future!!! Keep up the good work....you obviously have inherited just the right "genes"!!

Lilly, Montana just started the cowboy poetry project last year, it has been a real hit. If Texas does not have something like this going yet, we could send you the materials that come with the project, a manual, a cd with some of the classic poets. It is a well put together project. MCG did well with her's last year, she will probably do well with that one too, she has to write three to complete the project.

VERY NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm thoroughly impressed by your poem.

Lilly, you can do anything ya want in 4-H.......if there's not a listed project, ya just sign up for a Self-Determined one (Al is taking 2 SD projects this year.....his Cowboy project and the third year of Vet Science is an SD one).

Just don't bother ordering the SD project stuff.......it's all the same, and none of it makes any sense. We had the same ones a hundred years ago, when I was doing SD projects as a teen. It's better to just make up your own record sheets.

We do have project list sheets, but there's so much you can do that just kinda fits into a catagory, it's not necessarily listed, does that make sense? Lemme do some checkin and see if they have a place for poetry. I'll hafta dig all my 4H stuff out, since it's summer I've packed that stuff up and put it up. But least it's still fresh in my mind where I put it, and I won't hafta go huntin :D

A few years ago, Hubby got tired of my 4-H stuff taking up so much room, so our club bought a storage cabinet and put up at the Community Center........all our stuff is there, now, except for the cash box and my personal tote of stuff I need here at the house.

Makes it kinda inconvenient, though, to have to go up there, every time I need something that's not here at the house........

Lilly, I searched the NM 4-H site, nothing about poetry in the listed projects, so you'd probably have to go the SD route......

I'm pretty sure I'd never get my kids here interested in anything that remotely resembled something they might have to do in school. It's hard enough getting them to fill out their record sheets!

Well I looked thru my 4H stuff and on the district and state websites, the only thing mentioned about cowboy poetry and 4H requires the kids to do a play and incorperate that.

sw, if you still have my address I'd be interested in the packet you mentioned, maybe I can get it to the extention office and Fair committee and see if they'd like to add that to the list of things kids can do.

Lilly,
you can try the MSU.edu website for publications from extension, I tried it last night and for some reason it was not working, if you can't get it from there I can send it to you no problem. I can even copy MCGs "Spurrin' the Words" for you

Nice poem, dear. :)

I was a 10 year member in Montana 4-H and then a state officer. 4-H was the best thing I ever did for myself so it is nice to see you and a others on here so involved with it. Never give it up! We didn't have the poetry project when I was in, but I think it is a great addition.

Again, way to go with your poem. I could relate when I was your age. :) They don't know what they are missing!!
