I have a little okra in my garden. I didn't think it would be make it through the heat, lack of water, etc. but it has!!! This is my first experience growing it. Cool plant, the pods come right out of the middle/top of the plant!!! I have several pods, but am not sure how big/long they should be before picking. Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated.

I love fried okra...can't wait to get enough to have some! Lazy Ace will have a new eating experience!

Cheers---

Okra loves the heat as it's originally an African plant brought with the slaves. It was for yrs considered only fit for slaves.

Don't let the pods get too big as they will get tough as shoe leather and taste horrible. I always cut them when they are 4" or less in length.

The hotter it is the better okra plants thrive. But ya do hafta give em a drink of water occasionally. The more water you put on em, the faster they'll produce. And I mean fast......one day you'll see a bloom the next day it'll be a 3 inch pod.....Depends on what kind of okra variety you planted, but most is too tuff to eat after it's 5 inches long. So pick pick pick....easiest way to pick it is to take a parin knife to the garden with you and cut them off.

Better make LA's Chicken fried Okra

I live by the old saying "If it is fried get double but if it green it is trouble" I'll try it but not eager about it.

Fried is the only way to eat it. It's pretty good eating. I had a couple bowls of gumbo at lunch. Shrimp, clams, oysters, chicken, okra, and several unidentifiable items. Good eating.

I hope I get enough pods to get to have fried okra...hint, hint!

Lazy Ace doesn't eat anything unidentifiable, and many things that are identifiable. I too like gumbo, but I am pretty sure there is way too much green and unidentifiable stuff in there for Lazy Ace.

You need to cut okra every other day. You may be able to go 3 days but only if you clean it off. I pick every other day and cut every pod longer than an inch. Sometimes less. I like the young tinder stuff.
If you let it go too long and the pods get over grown and it will stop producing. You should get two or three pods to the plant.
If it slows down and is not producing, the old wives tale says to whip it with an apron. This may have merit. I have cut the lower leaves off and made it start producing again.

Caution: Bees love the blooms so if you cut in the morning when the fresh blooms are on the plant watch for bees. I seem to get stung cutting okra every year.
