On the subject of wingnuts

The term "wingnuts" gets thrown around quite a bit on this forum. It is usually proceeded by the word "right" which is spat out with derision.

Let's first look at the definition: wingnut or wing nut, a nut (hardware), with a pair of wings to enable it to be turned without tools. Okay, it is a nut that can be turned without tools, either to the right or to the left. The old slogan holds true, "leftie-loosie, rightie-thightie." Bolts and nuts of any kind are used to keep objects together. It appears to me that when you turn a nut to the right, the bolt tightens, and the object is secured. When you turn a nut to the left, the bolt is loosened. When a nut is turned too far to the left, it leaves the bolt, and whatever has been kept in shape falls apart. It sure looks like we would be better off turning the wingnuts to the right to secure our great country than to let the left wingnuts go too far, become disengaged from the bolt, and consequently let this whole great country fall apart.

Another term that always held merit is, "He runs a tight ship." You can't run a tight ship if all the nuts come off the bolts by going too far to the left.

Carry on, left wingnuts. You are well on the way to wrecking what used to be a mighty fine country.

See a nut and bolt can comfortably be secured even if loosened a little to the left,in fact to tight and the air starts getting cut off....or if both the nut and bolt decide to go free they can turn to the left, become free and explore many other options in its life. The nut and bolt could stay on thier own or find another bolt or nut....

However,if you turn a nut to far to the right it will snap .Hence the saying right wing whacko, its just a nut on a bolt turned to far right....It snapped..

You would possibly have a point if we were talking about normal nuts which are turned one way or the other with the extra leverage and help of a wrench. We are instead talking about wingnuts, which are designed as they are so they can be turned with fingers only. It would be pretty hard to turn a wingnut far enough to the right with only fingers so that it would break the bolt.

You apparently don't know the cheap quality of the Chinese wingnuts/bolts they're making anymore or my son- he broke off two the other day with only his fingers....

Unfortunately, wingnuts weren't designed to handle much vibration, shock, or load.

It is possible, however, to have a loose bolt remain in place (more or less) by placing 2 nuts on the end of the bolt and tightening them against each other, hence the term "double nutted". Now that may be some kind of a badge of honor in the porn industry, but I can think of some here, male and female, who the term "double nutted" fits.

BTW, AT, stop being Cheap Charlie. If you purchase CAT or John Deere hardware, you won't break 'em by hand. You probably order parts from JC Whitney, too.......

In my younger days I used to drive the guys at the Coast To Coast and Gamble's Store plumb insane by snapping every pair of 6" CeeTee pliers they had to sell with my left hand. (I'm a righty.) I told 'em when they had a pair I couldn't snap, I'd buy 'em. I guess that's why I always had Diamond brand pliers.........
