Yesterday was the first competition for our lil One Act Play group. They are doing "Blithe Spirit".
They chose to do it with British Accents. It's nor required, but the 1945 movie apparently was. They did an awsome job of it, I'm told. Lil Lilly plays "Elvira" a ghost. She got an honerable mention, another girl that has the lead female roll got best actress, and the boy with the main, got best actor. Wooooo hoooooo!!!!! They advance to Regionals. Which is next monday.
I honestly don't know how these kids do it. Lil Lilly's roll has over 400 lines. I don't think I could ever remember all that.
We are very proud of them tho. Hopefully I'll get a picture of them soon.

Well..hehe to my untrained ear and my texas accent...they sound perdy darn good to me. It's really cute. I haven't got to see the whole play. I've just been with the kids several times when they are practicing this part or that part.....it was hilarious at first when they first started puttin the accents in.

Mrs Greg....my new camera videos...with sound!!!!!! I could make this happen...maybe not the whole play...but a snippet to let you hear them hehehehehe

congrats Lil Lilly!

Did they have a coach to learn the accent? That must have been extremely difficult. I'm in awe of those who have that talent- difficult enough just learning lines.

Last night our son and daughter in law were here for a birthday dinner and told us his school buddy Lymen Chen has become a part-time actor and got a roll under Martin Scorcese (spelling??). The way he got into acting was his wife gave him the present of acting lessons after 9-11 since it was an unmet goal I guess. The teacher then had the connection to rolls that needed filling and his buddy got one. He is in another one that comes out this summer.
Better hold onto Lil Lilly tightly so she doesn't get snapped up by Hollywood!

nr, no they didn't have a coach for the accent. That's what so funny about the whole deal. They just went with what little they've seen/heard on television over the years, and ran with it. And it sounds pretty darn good. Their Drama Teacher is their English teacher. And she's just as "Texan" as the rest of us lol.

Maybe they been listenin to Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall LOL
Really I have no idea how they came up with their accents. I did help them practice their lines while we were gone on our FFA trips, Had 4 of the 5 cast members with me. So I had to read one part for the missing person. Their teacher told them that they didn't hafta do the accent. But they wanted to. So pretty much, from day one when they got their scripts they started with the accents. They thought it would be easier to memorize it, and the accent at the same time instead of learnin it "normal" then tryin to put the accent with it.

It reminds me of that fellow trying out for American Idol who was born in America but for some reason every time he sings it is with a British accent. He couldn't explain it and it dumbfounded Simon Cowell.

Well ya'll they had their competition yesterday. At the District level. And they didnt advance. Lil Lilly came home tellin me how vulgar all the rest of the plays were. Vulgar as in sexual content. She said they had to sit thru 6 or 7 other plays, all of which contained words such as "Orgasm" "horny" "eat me" one fella was on stage naked with only a keyboard covering himself. That play was titled "I googled myself"......she said that all of our kids were just sittin there all day with their mouths open in shock. And that if they didn't HAVE to stay and watch they would have gotten up and left. (I think I would have gotten up and walked out anyway) Perdy bad when highschool kids are offended by plays other highschool kids are doin.

When it came time for the judges to critique their play. All he had to say to them was, "I like sexual plays, and ya'lls didn't contain any"
I sure do wish I knew who to report or complain to. But I wasn't there!!!! They were outraged. Not necessarily that they didnt advance on to further competitions, but that they were basically disqualified because they had a nice clean comedy play, instead of something vulgar. You know, I told her, well, just because "everyone else is doin it, doesn't mean you hafta stoop to their level" But it's really sad that they even allow high school students to perform plays like that.
They did their best, and we are very proud of them. And I know they will continue to keep their plays clean, and not stoop to that kinda crap. Yes I"m a lil ticked off about the whole thing. But they know that we are all proud of them, and think they did an awesome job. They still hafta perform one more time for all the parents and community. And you can bet, I will reinforce the fact that we are glad they are "good kids".

That's disgusting. That judge needed a big kick on the rear. It's people with that attitude who are the problem in our society, and this is only high school  Who picks out the judges anyway? Maybe that is where you need to complain. I agree the kids did an awesome job and they should be proud of doing an excellent job on a clean play.

Did you get a snippet of their play on your new camera? I would love to hear their british accent :)

No Hanta, I will get the video when they perform for us. We don't know exactly when that'll be, because they never know how far they'll advance. So now that they are done competing, they'll probably start working on getting the Theater/Dinner night set up. Usually a fajita dinner. Always a good time too.

I do plan on talkin with their Drama/English teacher and see if she knows where complaints can be filed. But since I wasn't there, I think it should come from the kids. They were the one's sittin there open mouthed in shock. Also I think it would mean more to "whoever" in "higher up position" if it came from the kids and not the parents.

I agree totally. Hope something can be done, this just plain makes me sick
