Well sometime last night my young bull's either got chased, spooked or just plain tore down some fence and got out.In the dark I got all but 5 out of some woods south of us.Were located right on the highway and about 10 pm last night the sheriff called and said a car had hit a bull.Sure enough one got hit and the missing 4 were standing by the gate waiting to be let back in.The driver of the car had no Insurance and he fled the accident knowone was hurt but who know's what will happen my insurance covers my loss for the bull and I'm sure the driver of the vehicle will get sue happy.I'm sure glad knowone was hurt it could have been alot worse.I hauled all of the cattle that were on that farm down to my home place today I can keep a closer eye on them here.

Leaving the scene of a property damage accident is a misdemeanor. they could go to jail and lose their license.
I wouldnt worry too much about them suing you they have more to lose.

Sorry about the loss of your young bull.

Last fall, one of our heifers that we were getting ready to ship was hit by a car. The county road went through one of our pastures and was unfenced.

The driver came to the ranch house, admitted that he had hit the heifer and that it would need to be destroyed. He admitted that he was driving through the herd hear the road and was not paying much attention.

A month later we got a check for about $750 which was about what we would have received had we delivered her on our Superior contract.

There are a lot of good people in the world. :)

insurance and cattle are a bad mix. several years ago my FIL had a neighbors bull jump a fence, and it killed his bull. the neighbor took responsibility and turned it in to his insurance company. ( FIL had the same company from the same salesman! ) company said the bull was "coaxed over" and the death was his own problem. no payments.

so the neighbor told the FIL to sue him! so they went to court, presented the case, and the neighbor sat there as the judge declared in the FIL's favor......

insurance paid the court case, court costs, and fines the judge added.....

cost them an extra $500 to go through it that way rather than just pay off the claim in the first place!

We have a basic farm insurance that covers both the dead animal and the drivers losses. We didn't have that until a nieghbors barrel horse got out and was hit,the driver was killed and they sued the owner of the horse.Sad situation all around. :(

In Texas, you would not be responsable for any damages, unless they could prove you were negligent. Check the laws in your state...

Depends if MN is a fence in or fence out state.

That is prob my greatest fear with these cattle !

I don't think you will get sued. If no one was hurt and the guy didn't have insurance you most likely won't ever hear from him.

This is'nt nice to say BUT the car had Indian Reservation Plates on it so all bet's are off.

I have no problem with replaceing his car and paying for his motel and towing but much more than that I don't.Knowone was hurt and that's a major benefit..

Here its open range and the driver is at fault. Usually becomes a registered bred cow no matter the plumbing the critter has.
