Are summer born calves born slick haired? I've never thought of this until today, watching my calves panting in the sunshine and 65 degree weather.

I'll admit a little caffeine would be my friend  ... My question should've been, is their a mechanism which triggers hair coat growth/thickness in calves prior to birth. Daylight? Nutrition? Temperature? Genetics to a point?

Summer Wyoming calves and cows are slicker haired than southern cattle born at the same time. It has something to due with humidity.

To me, hair coat has always been a genetics thing. On our Angus calves, if their momma had a thick coat, the baby would be born that way too. If the momma was slick-haired, baby would be too, even when we switched from February calving to May/June. As for our Galloways, well they're just flat-out fuzzballs no matter what, and the Highlands are one step up the shag-meter from them.
