U.S. seeks to ease rules on Canadian pork, poultry

The agriculture department has proposed changing rules that forbid importation of Canadian pork and poultry products processed in plants that also handle cattle. The rule was a risk mitigation protocol, but USDA says that since the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy affecting swine and poultry is extremely small, the rule is "inconsistent."

The rule, which has a comment period extending to October 10, would also allow identification of ruminants by means of tattoos or other means, rather than the present requirement of an ear tag. It also would allow the import of gelatin products made from cowhide.
