Open pollinated corn

I was wondering if anyone had ever grown or knew anything about open pollinated corn. We usually grow hybrid corn varieties for silage but this year are thinking bout using an open pollinated variety. It is about half the price of hybrid seed and doesnt need as many inputs. Any suggestions or tips?

you can get a silage blend from most seed companies that is usually a blend of first run hybrids for a lot less money than the main sellers. Good silage is GOOD CORN that was chopped. I learned the hard way in 1975 that if you plant cheap seed you are probably going to get a cheap crop. I don't like paying for high priced seed but cheap seed can be higher priced in the end
