Opinion: Juan Williams, NPR and the Death of Liberalism

It's too bad that liberals are allowing the radical progressive to push them to the side, but it was only to be expected, and was predicted.

(Oct. 22) -- So my fellow Fox News analyst Juan Williams just got fired for saying something supposedly controversial about Muslims. But make no mistake, Juan isn't the only casualty today. So is American liberalism.

On "The O'Reilly Factor" on Monday night, Williams said, "I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

And this is a fireable offense?

NPR issued a statement saying Williams' comments "were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR."

Here's a bulletin, NPR: Lots and lots and lots of Americans feel the same way as Juan Williams. And that includes lots and lots of liberals. And probably a lot of liberals who work at NPR. Juan's "crime" wasn't that he said something bigoted. His crime is that he said something that liberals find politically incorrect. And that he said it out loud. And worst of all, that he said it on the Fox News Channel.

In liberal circles this is nothing less than a crime against humanity!

What makes this so crazy -- and so sad -- is that liberals are the open-minded ones, the ones who cherish the free exchange of ideas, the smart ones. And if you don't believe me, just ask any liberal, who will be glad to tell you how smart and open-minded he or she is. But these are the kind of people who believe in "free speech" only as long as they agree with you.

I feel bad for Juan, He's a good, decent man. His firing will make lots of other Americans think twice before they say something the boss may not like. And that's not a good thing in a democracy that thrives on vibrant, sometimes controversial ideas.

Sponsored Links But I feel worse for American liberals. Because what we have here is one more piece of evidence that too many of them have forgotten how to be liberal.

Only about 20 percent of Americans identify themselves as liberals. Liberalism was once a great American movement. It led the fight for civil rights, the most important issue, as far as I'm concerned, of the 20th century.

It's a shame that liberalism is dying in this country. It's an outright crime that liberals are killing it.

Bernie Goldberg is a television news reporter and winner of 10 Emmy Awards. He is the author of five books on the media and American culture, including the No. 1 best-seller "Bias"; is a regular commentator on Fox News; and reports for the HBO program "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel." This was a crazy statement on his part.

Wonder if he's noticed at times when getting in an elevator or near a white woman....she'll clutch her purse closer to her.......

I'd not worry about anyone dressed in ' traditional'......ALL the terrorists to date have NOT dressed in traditional wear when attacking like that.

They try to blend in....not stand out...so his statement was stupid/

What is stupid is to live in a free country and not be able to state your opinion or fears.

We have found the first only applies if you agree with the politicalt correct.

there are many Muslims thaat have come to his defense. This has more so to do with him being on Fox, than what he said.

But the freedom of speech is a big issue. I watched an interview with a rep. from CAIR on Meygn Kelly and they asked for him to be disciplined and NPR jumped. Something is wrong with that picture, when CAIR can censor sspeech in that manner.

And what he said was not even racist or bigoted, he expressed his feeling, a feeling that millions of Americans feel.

It's too bad that CAIR did not take the opportunity to open up the topic to discussion, instead of shutting it down.

I am sure he understands that scenario also. Who is to say if he sees a Black hoodlum with pants hanging below his crack and a red bandanna on his head and tats all over his neck that he does not also get a little frightened. You think white people are only ones frightened buy Gang Banger looking Black men?

I doubt to man women get fearful when a black man gets in the Bank elevator wearing a $1,000 suit and $500 shoes. I know I wouldn't, but I would in the previous situation.

Sounds like he was not stupid, he just has a higher level of self preservation in him. It usually comes with higher intelligence!

The best thing we can do today is to contact, via email, our Senators and Congressman or woman and tell them we will no longer support funding of NPR.

First This firing of Juan is a prime example of just how tolerant the Liberal Left really are. Everyone knows that if Juan would have gone on O'Rielly and said when he sees somebody wearing a Tea Party T-shirt he is scared he would still be working for NPR.

Second When FAR LEFT George Soros can buy NPR off with a couple million dollars and get them to fire Juan after ten years of respected work because he dared to go on FOX and voice his fears, there is no guessing that NPR is a VERY Liberal Left bias media outlet. And tax payer money should not be used to support a Far Left propoganda machine like NPR.

Last the Liberal Left claim they care about the US but yet they have allowed their party and country to be taken over and threatened by George Soros. A man that thinks anything goes as long as it puts a few million/billion in his greedy pocket. He is evil and needs to be stopped before he does to the US what he has done to other countries.

Andrei Codrescu is a Romanian-born American poet, novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and commentator for National Public Radio.

NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu reported that some Christians believe in a "rapture" and 4 million believers will ascend to Heaven immediately. He continued, "The evaporation of 4 million who believe this crap would leave the world an instantly better place."

Nina Totenberg is an American legal affairs correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR). Her reports air regularly on NPR's newsmagazines All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition.

Nina Totenberg commented that if there was "retributive justice," former Sen. Jesse Helms would "get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it."

NPR's on-air contributors have been advised to limit their association with FOX. Williams had "been warned several times that O’Reilly is a professional provocateur and to be careful."

It is not what you say... but who you say it with????

seems to me free speech and our free press just took another sharp blow...

Wrong Jingo SOME terrorists hide out in nontraditional clothing to not be detected in their attacks BUT Millions of pictures have been shown to us of Terrorists in Muslin traditional clothing hiding out is rat holes, sand caves, even innocent looking neighborhoods and Mosques killing innocent people who don't support their beliefs. Those hiding in Non Traditional clothing and innocent looking Neighborhood should be considered COWARDS. Do you really think it is stupid to not trust COWARDS and those that harbor them, Sorry but not me. If the millions of good Muslims don't want to be feared then they need to stand up and see to it that people know who the extremists are and what they are up to. If they want to keep quiet about the cells living in their neighborhoods and planning the next attack then they can expected to be FEARED on sight.
