To President Barack Obama,
My father, Harold Patterson, will be 99 years old on August 8, 2014. He has worked his entire life, paid his taxes, paid into Social Security and Medicare from the inception of these two agencies. He has never been in trouble with the law, in fact I do not think he has ever had a traffic ticket. He has always been there to help others when they needed help. He now finds himself in need of help to take care of him as he prepares to join Mom in Heaven. Guess what? There is no funding to help take care of him. The hospital can only admit him as a patient for 48 hours and then has to transfer him to respite care which he has to pay for out of his pocket. He cannot go to the nursing home, apply for Medicade and be taken care of because there is no bed for him so he has to stay on the hospital side. I have taken care of both of my parents for the last six years and I have tried my best to give them the best possible care in their final years. Not once did Medicare step up and give me an hour of Respite care so I could make a doctor appointment for my self. I am on Total Permanent Disability and can not lift him.
You have put the rights of illegal aliens, crossing the border into the US before the rights of those, who have paid their way for their entire lifetime. Dad gets $1327.00 a month. It costs $166 per day for Respite Care which means he can stay in the hospital for 7.9 days out of the month. How do I pay for the other 23.1 days? Dad has a bladder infection and a lung infection, complicated by a mass in his chest. He is 99 years old! Should we take heroic measures, put him through a major surgery (which I highly doubt he will survive), because Medicare will pay for that, or just let him peacefully pass away, without any extreme intervention? Or better yet, should I become David Kevorkian and assist my Dad in suicide?
Under Medicare part D my Dad pays $200 per month for his Junivia and my son-in-law pays only a $10 Copay for the same drug. Under Obamacare we are gouging our elderly and giving them less than acceptable health care!!
