I'm willing to concede that oil and vengeance may have played their parts, but I refuse to believe we'd be better off with Saddam still in power. Kolanuraven: my speculation is my personal opinion. I don't write about international affairs, so I don't need to be impartial. If the topic was R-CALF or something, then I'd need to keep my clap shut. That said, I don't think I'm off the mark, and I don't need to be a military specialist to know that a despotic regime openly hostile to the U.S. would undermine our efforts in the region. From a diplomatic perspective, we're just not at that point with Iran or North Korea as we were with Saddam; he undermined every effort at containment (see Oil For Food scandal). It's too early to tell if Iraq will have a positive or negative on the war on terror, because it's impossible to tell if ANYTHING will have a positive or negative effect at this point. History will decide whether this war was a mistake or not - but we're in it up to our knickers, so I think it's better to remain optimistic otherwise we undermine the troops.
