ATHERTON, Calif. – A California school teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after he rattled a table to get the attention of his math students, startling an eighth-grade girl who used her cell phone to call police.

Atherton police Sgt. Tim Lynch tells the Palo Alto Daily News that officers went to Selby Lane School Tuesday afternoon because of reports a teacher was causing a disturbance.

Officers found a calm teacher with class in session.

The sergeant says the teacher's table-rattling startled a student and she used her cell phone to call 911. He says other students in the class weren't bothered by the teacher's actions.

Redwood City School District deputy superintendent John Baker says the teacher was placed on leave because there was a police response.

lets see.. how about charging the 13 year old with calling 911 for no reason, then expel her for using a cell during school hours.

wouldn't that make a bit more sense?

I don't blame her for being scared. She's probably been watching the news and how they've been acting in Wisconsin.

I can see this turning into a big legal battle in one of two ways. The school will try limiting the students use of cellphones during class and the parents will step in and claim the school is stepping on their childrens rights and sue the school. OR the parents of the child that called 911 when it was not an emergency will take the teacher and school to court and sue for emotional distress of the child. Knowing the stupid judicial system, the parents will win and be able to spoil their brat even more with the million dollar settlement that will be awarded just because a teacher tried to regain control and actually teach the students something. Both the parents and courts will be teach the students the longer lasting lesson that being how to abuse the system and get paid for it.
